Barcelona Targets Rodri Transfer for €70m

FC Barcelona have tightened their grip on the Rodri operation and are now working off a clear script: land the Manchester City midfielder without breaking the €70 million barrier they set from day one.

The Catalan club, in constant contact with the player’s camp, have returned to the table with fresh proposals aimed at finally unlocking an agreement with City. Several formulas are in play, but the numbers barely move off one key idea: a total package capped at €70m, as reported by SPORT.

Barcelona hold their line

Inside the deal, Barcelona are ready to put down €60m–€65m in guaranteed money, with the rest to come through performance-related bonuses. At the club, that’s seen as the “fairest” final offer they can make – strong enough to tempt City, but still within the financial limits they have imposed on themselves.

That stance also edges closer to the figure City were willing to accept when they held talks with Real Madrid, a number that sat below the €80m they initially quoted to Barcelona. The gap, once wide, is narrowing.

Negotiations between the two clubs have been almost non-stop for several days. Calls, counterproposals, tweaks to the structure. Step by step, the positions are moving towards the same point. Within Barça, optimism has grown that an agreement is now within reach, even if the final stretch may still take several hours or a couple more days.

The shared objective is clear: wrap up the transfer before the end of the week.

Time pressure around Friday

Rodri himself would already have liked to be in Barcelona, training alongside his Spain teammates and settling into his new surroundings. The timing has not allowed it. Paperwork and numbers have moved slower than his own desire to change shirts.

The next internal deadline is Friday. On that day, the midfielder is due back in Manchester for medical tests and the start of City’s pre-season preparations. The ideal scenario for Barcelona is simple: have the deal signed off before he needs to board that plane.

If the transfer is not fully completed by then, the expectation around the talks is that City are likely to allow him to remain away from Manchester, especially if negotiations are already at the final stage and only details remain. That would be another sign that the operation is entering its decisive hours.

A contract to match a Ballon d’Or winner

On the player’s side, everything is already lined up. Rodri has an agreement in principle with Barcelona for four seasons, on a salary that would immediately catapult him into the top three earners in the squad.

The financial package reflects his status: Ballon d’Or winner, standout performer at the World Cup, and a key figure in Manchester City’s recent success. Barcelona’s offer also takes into account his current wages in England and the renewal proposal City had already put on the table to try to keep him.

Sporting director Deco has been leading the operation for Barça, in permanent contact with his Manchester City counterpart Hugo Viana as both clubs try to stitch together the final agreement.

From the start, Barcelona have insisted they would not overpay, pointing to one crucial fact: Rodri’s contract with City expires at the end of this season. With that context, the Catalans believe a package of up to €70m including bonuses is a fair reflection of his market value at this point in time.

The structure now seen as most likely to close the gap is €65m guaranteed plus €5m in bonuses tied to collective titles – incentives that, from Barcelona’s point of view, are relatively easy to achieve if Rodri helps drive the team to silverware.

The numbers are converging. The calls have not stopped. And inside the Camp Nou offices, there is a growing sense that the breakthrough they have been pushing for could arrive at any moment.
