Barcelona Targets Left-Footed Centre-Back Before Transfer Deadline

FC Barcelona are heading into the final days of the transfer window with a packed agenda and very little margin for error. A new striker tops the list, with Julian Alvarez still the dream signing, while deals for Rodri and Joao Cancelo are being pushed towards the finish line.

Behind those headline moves, though, Deco is working on something else. A final twist.

The sporting director wants a top-level, left-footed centre-back before the window shuts, if the numbers add up. It is not a whim. According to SPORT, Deco has viewed this as essential for weeks, even as internal debate rumbled on about whether the squad really needed another defender.

Araujo exit reopens an old file

Deco already went into the summer convinced that the back line needed a serious upgrade.

Barcelona sounded out a move for Alessandro Bastoni at Inter, a defender who ticks almost every box for a modern left-sided centre-back. The idea did not survive the internal filter. There was no full sporting consensus and Inter’s valuation was judged excessive, so the operation was shelved.

The file stayed there, gathering dust, until Ronald Araujo’s departure changed the landscape. With one of the pillars of the defence gone, Barça have gone back to the market. This time with more determination.

Hansi Flick sees things differently. The German coach has never placed the centre-back position at the top of his list. He would gladly accept an upgrade, but his main demand is clear: a centre-forward.

Flick is delighted with Pau Cubarsi’s rise and the emergence of Gerard Martin. He also has Andreas Christensen and Eric Garcia to lean on, while academy defender Alvaro Cortes has impressed enough to be considered a genuine option.

Even so, within the club there is a strong feeling that an experienced centre-back, especially one who is left-footed, would give the squad more security and balance. Depth for a long season, and a profile that Barça currently lack.

Laporte, Lukeba and the profile Barça want

Barcelona are not just looking for any defender. They want someone who can walk straight into the team and set the tone, much like Inigo Martinez was expected to do when he arrived.

The ideal signing is clear in Deco’s mind: left-footed, experienced, and comfortable defending high up the pitch in Flick’s aggressive system.

Aymeric Laporte has moved towards the front of the queue. His camp had suggested there was an affordable release clause in his contract, which encouraged Barça to seriously explore the option.

Laporte would slot in naturally. He already formed a partnership with Cubarsi at the World Cup, and that pairing delivered an excellent performance on the biggest stage. The chemistry is there, the style fits, and the adaptation curve would be short.

There is a problem. Athletic insist there is no such bargain clause and have no intention of negotiating his exit. For now, that door is bolted.

Another name firmly on the list is Castello Lukeba of RB Leipzig. Barça scouts have followed him closely throughout the year and like what they see: strong physically, calm on the ball, and with the distribution to start attacks from deep.

Lukeba offers potential and resale value. He also comes with a significant price tag. Any move for him would demand a major financial effort at a time when Barcelona are already stretching to close other deals.

Deco’s last big swing

So the centre-back question remains open, parked but not forgotten. The club’s immediate energy is going into the attack and the flanks: securing a striker, completing Rodri, and finalising Cancelo. Inside the sporting department, those two latter operations are viewed as close.

Only when those pieces fall into place will Barça fully turn back to the defence. That is where Deco wants his final move of the window, the last big swing to round off the squad.

If the finances allow it, a left-footed centre-back will arrive. If not, Barcelona will march into the season trusting Cubarsi, Martin and the rest to carry a heavier load than planned.
