Barcelona's Late Summer Transfer Window Challenges: Laporte and Lukeba

Barcelona’s summer window was already complicated. It just got another layer.

With the clock ticking down, the club are juggling a move for Rodri from Manchester City, the hunt for a striker after the Julian Alvarez option cooled, and now a potential late swoop for a centre-back.

Araujo’s loan to Liverpool has blown a hole in the back line. Barça want to fill it with a left-footed central defender, and two names have moved to the front of the conversation: RB Leipzig’s Castello Lukeba and Athletic Club’s Aymeric Laporte.

Laporte on the table – but only on Barça’s terms

Lukeba has been tracked for weeks, but Laporte has re-entered the picture with force. According to SPORT, the defender has been offered to Barcelona for a fixed fee tied to his release clause, and the player is open to leaving Athletic this summer.

On paper, it looks straightforward. Barcelona don’t see it that way.

Inside the club, there is a clear message: no risks, no grey areas, no repeat of past headaches with Athletic. Any move for Laporte will only advance if every legal and contractual detail is crystal clear from the very start.

Barça want to know the exact wording of the clause, the precise mechanism to activate it, and, crucially, Athletic’s stance before they even put a formal offer on the table. One misunderstanding with the Basque club was enough. They are not planning on a second.

Nico Williams fallout still lingers

That hard line comes straight from the fallout of the Nico Williams saga. Relations between Barcelona and Athletic cooled significantly after last summer’s events, and the atmosphere between the two clubs has not fully recovered.

Because of that, any Laporte operation has to be “clean” in every sense: legally, financially and politically. No room for interpretation, no back-door negotiations, no surprises.

If there is the slightest doubt around the clause or Athletic’s reaction, Barça are ready to walk away, even if the player fits exactly what they are looking for.

The perfect profile – with a big asterisk

From a sporting angle, Laporte almost ticks the boxes too neatly.

He is left-footed, experienced at the highest level and calm in possession, ideal for a team that wants to build from the back. Those are precisely the attributes Barcelona have been assessing as they consider reshaping their defence after Araujo’s departure.

There is also the on-pitch chemistry factor. Laporte built a strong partnership with Pau Cubarsi at the World Cup, and that understanding is not lost on decision-makers at the club. Recreating that axis at Camp Nou is an enticing prospect.

All of that makes the defender an obvious candidate if Barcelona do decide to bring in a new centre-back before the window shuts.

But for once, sporting logic comes second.

The first filter is legal certainty. Only if the release clause is clearly usable, the fee attainable under Barça’s financial limits, and Athletic’s position fully understood will the club move.

If those conditions line up, the 32-year-old instantly becomes one of the most intriguing late-window stories in Europe. If they don’t, Barcelona will look elsewhere and the Laporte question will hang over a defence still searching for its final piece.
