Barcelona Striker Search Hits a Snag: Joao Pedro Signs Until 2034

Barcelona’s striker search has taken another hit. One of the names on Deco’s shortlist is gone – and gone for a very long time.

Chelsea lock Joao Pedro down until 2034

While Barça brace themselves for disappointment in their chase of Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez, Joao Pedro has slipped completely out of reach. The Brazilian, widely reported as a centre-forward option for the Catalan club, has signed a new contract at Chelsea running all the way to 2034, the London side confirmed on their official channels.

It is a statement deal. Not just a renewal, but a declaration that Chelsea intend to build around the 24-year-old for the long term.

Joao Pedro only arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton and Hove Albion in July 2025, yet he has moved at remarkable speed. He announced himself on the biggest possible stage, scoring in both the semi-final and final of the FIFA Club World Cup, dragging Chelsea to the world title and instantly justifying the club’s investment.

The momentum did not fade when the confetti settled.

Instant hero in blue

In his first full season in London, Joao Pedro hit 20 goals in all competitions. He finished the 2025-2026 campaign as Chelsea’s Player of the Season, an award voted for by the supporters who have quickly adopted him as one of their own.

The Brazilian has been clear about what the new deal means to him.

“I am very happy to sign a new contract with Chelsea. I always dreamed of playing for a big club, and it means a lot to me to commit to this club for the long term. Chelsea have a long history of victories, and have big ambitions for the future,” he said after putting pen to paper.

The connection runs deeper than just goals and trophies.

“I have a very good relationship with everyone here at the club, and I have felt at home here in London from the moment I joined,” he added, underlining why prising him away was always going to be difficult.

The ambition inside the dressing room matches the club’s stance.

“Everyone is very excited for this season. We know we are capable of achieving many things, we have a great team, and we have a manager who wants to win and has won before. I am fully committed, everyone is ready, and we hope we can achieve our goals,” he continued.

Big moments, big goals

Chelsea’s faith is rooted in decisive contributions. Joao Pedro’s impact on their recent history is already etched in key nights.

He struck twice against his former club Fluminense to send Chelsea into the Club World Cup final, then scored again in the showpiece against Paris Saint-Germain to secure the trophy. When the new domestic season kicked off, he was there again, scoring Chelsea’s first goal of the 2025-2026 Premier League campaign away at West Ham United, before providing the only strike in a tight win at Tottenham Hotspur.

Europe told the same story. Joao Pedro scored twice as Chelsea beat Napoli in the UEFA Champions League, underlining his status as a forward who delivers when the stakes rise.

For Barcelona, that profile was exactly what they were searching for. For Chelsea, it is precisely why they have locked him down until 2034.

One club loses an option. Another tightens its grip on a centrepiece. The next move in the striker market now lies firmly back in Barcelona’s hands.
