Aston Villa Close in on Leon Goretzka to Rebuild Midfield
Aston Villa are closing on a major midfield coup, with Germany international Leon Goretzka in advanced talks over a free transfer to Villa Park.
The 31-year-old is available after leaving Bayern Munich in the summer and has held positive discussions with the club, as Unai Emery moves quickly to reinforce a squad that has been stripped of several key names.
Emery turns to serial winner Goretzka
Emery’s need is obvious. Amadou Onana is out until next year with a knee injury suffered while on duty for Belgium at the World Cup, leaving a sizeable gap in the heart of Villa’s midfield.
Villa had pursued Joao Palhinha, another familiar face from Bayern, but that chase is effectively over with the midfielder now expected to join Benfica. The focus has turned fully to Goretzka – and the profile is exactly what Emery wants.
Goretzka leaves Bayern with a heavyweight résumé.
- 312 appearances.
- 51 goals.
- Eight years at the core of a side that dominated Germany and conquered Europe.
He collected seven Bundesliga titles and lifted the Champions League trophy in 2020, and his pedigree stretches onto the international stage: 73 caps for Germany and three outings at this summer’s World Cup. For a Villa side heading into a new phase, he offers experience, presence and a proven big-game temperament.
Villa’s summer exodus
The move comes against the backdrop of a turbulent window at Villa Park.
Ezri Konsa departed for Arsenal on Friday in a deal worth an initial £51m. Morgan Rogers followed the money to Chelsea for £117m, a statement fee that underlined just how aggressively England’s elite are shopping in Birmingham.
The exits have not stopped there. Youri Tielemans left for Manchester United in July, while Lucas Digne returned to Paris St-Germain earlier this month, stripping Emery of yet more senior quality and forcing a rapid reset of his core squad.
Goretzka, if completed, would be the kind of stabilising arrival that changes the mood of a dressing room. A leader who has lived inside a winning culture for nearly a decade.
Watkins future still in the balance
Amid all this movement, one question still hangs over Villa Park: will Ollie Watkins stay?
Emery admitted on Friday that he cannot guarantee the England striker will remain at the club beyond the transfer deadline, with strong interest from Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia.
“We have an issue with him, it's clear. He is our player. We have had offers for him,” Emery said. “I don't want to sell him but it can change because if it's a good option for him and the club and I can replace him in the squad, this is the routine we have and we did before with the players who are leaving.”
It is a blunt, honest assessment of where Villa now operate: ambitious enough to chase a Champions League winner like Goretzka, but realistic about the pull of huge money and new projects elsewhere.
If Goretzka walks through the doors at Bodymoor Heath in the coming days, he will arrive at a club in transition, one trying to hold its nerve while the market swirls around it. The next decisive call may not be about who comes in, but whether Villa are prepared to let their main goalscorer walk away.
