On paper, Suarez looks like a strong alternative to Alvarez. He is less of a wild swing than names such as Victor Osimhen or Dusan Vlahovic, whose deals would be even more complex and costly.

His numbers at Sporting are impressive: 38 goals in 54 matches. Those are elite figures in any league and speak to a forward who has found his stride. He is not a stranger to Spanish football either, having turned out for Granada and Almeria earlier in his career.

But that is where the doubts begin.

In La Liga, Suarez managed just 23 goals in over 100 appearances. He has clearly grown since then, yet that record lingers in the background when you start talking about €80 million. Scouts and executives remember the missed chances, the lack of polish in tight spaces, the technical ceiling that sits below someone like Alvarez.

He can score. He can stretch defences. He can occupy centre-backs. But can he justify a fee that would shape Barcelona’s attack – and their budget – for years?

Value or overpay?

This is the tension inside Barcelona’s planning. Suarez is an “interesting alternative,” as the reports frame it, and undeniably a better, more mature forward than the version La Liga saw a few years ago. His explosion at Sporting proves that.

Yet €80 million for a player with his La Liga history and his tendency to waste clear chances feels heavy. For that kind of outlay, Barcelona will argue they should be able to land a more complete, technically gifted forward, or at least someone whose profile leaves fewer questions at the very top level.
