Barcelona Pursue Leipzig’s Lukeba as Centre-Back Options Dwindle

Barcelona’s summer rebuild has a clear priority: a new centre-back. The problem? It is also the position where the least concrete progress has been made.

Names have flown around the rumour mill in recent weeks – Aymeric Laporte, Alessandro Bastoni, Castello Lukeba, even Cristian Romero – but nothing has truly moved. Now, a report from SPORT points to the first serious step in one specific direction.

Barcelona call Leipzig about Lukeba

Barcelona have opened talks with RB Leipzig to ask about Castello Lukeba’s situation and potential price. It is an enquiry, not yet a negotiation, but it marks a shift from vague links to direct contact.

Lukeba ticks several of the boxes Deco and Hansi Flick want. Left-footed. Young. Aggressive. Comfortable on the ball. Inside the club, he has sat near the top of their centre-back shortlist for a long time and is viewed as one of the standout emerging defenders in Europe.

The Frenchman already has interest from the Premier League and options on the table, yet he has stayed put in the Bundesliga so far. A move to Barcelona, though, is said to appeal to him, and he is open to making the jump if the clubs can agree terms.

Leipzig are under no pressure to sell, but Lukeba’s market value currently sits around €30 million. Barcelona have asked what figure the German side would demand to let him go.

Araujo gone, Kounde in the spotlight

Ronald Araujo’s move to Liverpool has ripped a hole through the heart of Barcelona’s defence. The position was a concern before; now it is exposed. Inside the sporting department, there is no debate: signing a centre-back is a priority, not a luxury.

Jules Kounde’s future could now dictate how bold Barcelona can be. The French defender has offers and a departure is not off the table. His case hangs over the Lukeba pursuit like a shadow.

If Kounde stays, Barcelona are more likely to seek a targeted, financially manageable signing to stabilise the back line. If he leaves, the club would be pushed towards a bigger, more expensive defensive operation – a marquee reinforcement rather than a complementary piece.

That context makes Lukeba’s profile particularly attractive. At €30 million, he sits in a bracket that, while not cheap for Barcelona’s current finances, is still more accessible than some of the elite, established names.

Flick’s preferences narrow the field

Inside the coaching staff, the debate has already taken shape. Hansi Flick is not convinced by every name that has been floated. Bastoni and Romero, for example, are not among the options he favours, which trims down an already complicated market.

That leaves a shorter list of realistic targets. Laporte remains an alternative, with his experience and left foot offering obvious appeal. But age, salary, and the club’s long-term planning weigh heavily on every decision.

Lukeba, by contrast, offers upside and longevity. Young, left-sided, already proven at a high level, and with room to grow under Flick’s structure. For a club trying to rebuild a defence after losing Araujo and potentially facing life without Kounde, that combination is hard to ignore.

Barcelona have made their first move. Leipzig know there is interest. Lukeba is listening.
