Barcelona’s search for a left-footed centre-back has taken a sharp turn, and it’s away from two of the most talked-about names on the market.

Matteo Moretto has made it clear: Castello Lukeba and Goncalo Inacio are not the players Barcelona are working to sign. Not now. Not quietly. Not in the background. They’re out of the frame.

A specific profile for Flick’s back line

Inside the club, there is no doubt about the brief. Barcelona want a left-footed central defender. That profile has been marked in red as a priority to strengthen the squad and give Hansi Flick a specialist option on that side of the defence.

Reports in recent weeks painted a picture of a club moving in silence, probing the market without leaving too many fingerprints. Moretto then added a crucial detail that changed the tone of the story: the defender they are targeting does not play in Spain and is not a name that casual fans would instantly recognise.

Naturally, attention swung towards Lukeba.

The RB Leipzig defender has been followed by Barcelona, and Flick is known to appreciate the Frenchman’s ability to operate both as a centre-back and a left-back. On paper, he ticks a lot of boxes. Young, versatile, left-footed, already competing at a high level.

But that line of thought has now hit a dead end.

Lukeba ‘100%’ ruled out

Moretto has shut that door completely. According to him, Barcelona are not working on Lukeba. The journalist went as far as to rule out the Leipzig defender’s profile “100%”, cutting off the growing speculation that the 23-year-old might be the mystery signing in waiting.

It’s not a question of quality. Lukeba would have brought plenty to Flick’s defence. His versatility across the back line, his comfort on the left, his ability to slide out wide or tuck in centrally – all of it fits what Barcelona are looking for in theory.

But the reality is different. The club’s actual search is heading in another direction.

Barcelona are not simply scanning the usual list of big names and obvious candidates. The message from within the operation is that the sporting department is chasing a different kind of profile – less exposed, less hyped, and certainly less familiar to the wider public.

Inacio also off the table

The same verdict now applies to Goncalo Inacio.

The Sporting CP centre-back has long been linked with a move to a top club, and his name naturally surfaced in conversations about Barcelona’s hunt for a left-footed defender. Yet Moretto’s information points the other way: Inacio is not part of Barcelona’s current plans either.

Here, the key detail is recognition.

The defender Barcelona are working on is described as being less well known than both Lukeba and Inacio. That alone explains the unusual silence around the operation. No steady drip of rumours, no daily updates, no familiar carousel of transfer speculation.

This time, Barcelona seem determined to keep the deal in the shadows for as long as possible.
