Barcelona Strikes Financial Deal with PSG for Ferran Torres

Barcelona have turned Ferran Torres’ departure into a much-needed financial win, striking a deal with Paris Saint-Germain that crucially keeps Manchester City’s sell-on clause out of play.

Journalist Nil Sola reports that Torres is set to join PSG for under €50 million on a five-year contract, a fee that lands comfortably below the trigger point of a costly clause inserted into the deal that took him from City to Camp Nou in 2022.

City had been due an extra €10m if Barcelona sold the Spain international for €55m or more. That threshold will not be reached. A separate clause would also have sent €8m to the Premier League champions had Barça renewed Torres’ contract instead of cashing in.

The outcome is clear: Barcelona avoid up to €18m in additional obligations to City and still bank a profit on the 24-year-old. For a club still wrestling with financial constraints, it is a sharp piece of business.

Sporting Concerns

The sporting picture is far less tidy.

If Torres completes his move to Paris, Barcelona will be left without a natural senior striker. Robert Lewandowski has already walked away as a free agent, and there is no obvious No 9 waiting in the wings at Montjuïc.

So the search has turned urgent.

Targets

Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez has emerged as a prime target, with Barcelona previously tabling a €100m bid. Atlético’s stance, though, has been blunt: he is not for sale. That line has barely moved, leaving the Catalans staring at a dead end for now.

They have looked elsewhere. Bayern Munich’s Harry Kane has been discussed as an option, a marquee solution to a marquee problem, while Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi has also featured on the shortlist as a younger, more developmental bet.

Both paths are blocked.

Kane is poised to extend his contract with Bayern, shutting the door on any immediate escape route from the Bundesliga. Kroupi, meanwhile, faces three to four months out with a foot injury, removing him as a realistic short-term answer.

So Barcelona celebrate a clean financial victory on Ferran Torres. But with the season looming and no senior striker in sight, how long can they afford to wait before that win on the balance sheet starts to hurt on the pitch?
