For all the optimism in Barcelona, one image underlines the reality: Rodri boarding a flight back to England.

The Spain international spent Thursday in Madrid, waiting for clarity on his future as talks rumbled on in the background. There was hope City might follow the example set with Ferran and excuse him from training while negotiations advanced.

That call never came.

With no exemption granted, Rodri travelled from Madrid’s Barajas Airport to Liverpool, from where he could continue on to Manchester and report as planned. As of late yesterday, there had been no cancellation of his scheduled involvement in City’s training session.

So the midfielder returns to work, even as his name sits at the centre of one of the window’s biggest potential moves.

Barcelona, strengthened by Ferran’s sale and armed with more room under Financial Fair Play, are edging closer to City’s stance. City, aware of the narrowing financial gap and the player’s situation, must decide how far they are willing to bend.
