Barcelona's Tactical Shift: Why Deco Prefers Gordon Over Rashford

Barcelona sporting director Deco has drawn a clear tactical line between Anthony Gordon and Marcus Rashford – and explained why only one of them fits Hansi Flick’s blueprint.

Rashford left a strong imprint on the club last season. Fourteen goals in all competitions on loan, a La Liga title, a Copa del Rey. Barcelona even secured a bargain-looking option to buy the Manchester United forward permanently for £30.3m (€35m) at the end of his 12-month stay.

They walked away.

The 28-year-old returned to Old Trafford in the summer as Barcelona pivoted in a different direction, pouring their biggest outlay into Gordon and Manchester City midfielder Rodri. Deco insists that decision was not about sentiment. It was about style.

“We are extremely grateful to Rashford,” Deco told Catalan station RAC1 on Thursday. “He contributed a lot last season, but our idea of play is much more linked to Anthony's. His style fits with what the coach is looking for.”

Energy over reputation

Gordon arrived from Newcastle United in a deal worth more than €80m (£69.3m), a huge fee for a player who openly admitted he had dreamed of Barcelona since he was “three years of age”. For Deco, that desire mattered, but it was the profile that closed the deal.

“In the case of Gordon, we saw that he was one of the figures we needed,” Deco said. “When Raphinha wasn't on the pitch, the team lost energy and with him we could solve it.”

Barcelona had identified a recurring problem last season. When Raphinha missed games, the front line sagged. The press lost bite. The wide threat dulled. Flick wanted a winger who could crank up the tempo and sustain it.

“We needed more intensity,” Deco explained. “We analysed a lot of wingers. Signing someone from the Premier League is almost impossible, but [Flick] was clear with what he wanted and we worked on a deal from there.”

The “almost impossible” became possible because of Gordon’s stance. Deco admitted the player helped force Newcastle’s hand.

“The big advantage we had is that the player wanted to come and he was able to put on pressure [at Newcastle to be allowed to leave],” he said.

A new wide reference for Flick

Rashford’s numbers and versatility made him a serious candidate to stay, yet Flick’s system demands more constant, high-octane running from the flanks and a different kind of directness. In Deco’s words, Gordon is simply closer to that ideal.

Barcelona’s summer, then, was not about choosing between good and bad options. It was about choosing between two different types of winger for a very specific plan.

The early evidence supports the call. Gordon has made five appearances so far and already has four assists. Barcelona have won all four of their La Liga games, scoring 17 and conceding only two, with their attacking play snapping and surging in a way that matches Flick’s high-energy vision.

Rashford helped deliver trophies. Gordon has been signed to shape the next version of Barcelona. The question now is how far that new, relentless edge on the wing can carry Flick’s team this season.
