Barcelona's Centre-Back Search Excludes Gonçalo Inácio

Barcelona’s search for a new centre-back will not include Gonçalo Inácio.

After sending captain Ronald Araújo on loan to Liverpool this summer, the club opened up a high-profile vacancy at the heart of defence. Araújo’s move ends a turbulent spell in Catalonia and hands him a fresh start on Merseyside, but it also forces Barça to rethink the structure of their back line.

Inside the club, there is clear awareness that someone has to step into that space. La Masia product Álvaro Cortés is viewed as a genuine option to make the jump, yet the sporting department has also been scanning the market for an opportunity that fits both budget and profile.

In recent days, that spotlight swung onto Sporting CP defender Gonçalo Inácio. A left-footed centre-back, 24 years old, established in Portugal and often linked with major European clubs – on paper, he ticks a lot of boxes.

But not for Barcelona.

‘Zero’ talks with Inácio

According to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are not working on any deal for Inácio. The club have denied that negotiations are underway, and Romano described the current level of contact as “zero”.

That clarity matters. Barcelona have been consistently linked with signing another centre-back before the transfer window shuts, and Inácio’s name had quickly gathered momentum in the rumour mill. Inside the club, though, he is not considered an active target.

The stance mirrors how Barça handled previous speculation around Cristian Romero. The Tottenham defender was discussed, but the idea never advanced because head coach Hansi Flick did not give the green light. The same dynamic is now in play with Inácio.

Flick and the sporting leadership are aligned: they do not want to move for the Sporting CP defender. Without that internal backing, any transfer is described as highly unlikely.

Inácio’s rise in Portugal is not in doubt. He has built a reputation as a reliable, modern centre-back in the Primeira Liga. But Barcelona’s hierarchy clearly see a sizeable gap between excelling for Sporting and anchoring the defence at Camp Nou.

Market still open – and complicated

Ruling out Inácio does not mean Barcelona are done with defensive business.

With roughly a week left before deadline day, the club are still exploring options to strengthen the back line. The situation is fluid, and other exits could reshape the priorities again.

One of those possible departures is Alejandro Balde. If the left-back leaves, Barça will suddenly be short not only at centre-back but also on the flank. That scenario would push sporting director Deco towards a very specific profile: a left-footed central defender who can also operate at left-back.

It is a narrow market, and Barcelona are operating under familiar financial constraints. Yet the need is real. Araújo is gone, Balde could follow, and the squad still has to be built to Flick’s demands.

The club have days, not weeks, to solve it – and whoever walks through the door next will help define what this new Barcelona defence is going to look like.
