Barcelona Confirms Bid for Julián Álvarez Amid Atlético Madrid Tensions
Barcelona have stepped out from behind the curtain in the Julián Álvarez saga – but only just.
Vice-president Rafael Yuste has confirmed that the club tabled an offer for the Atlético Madrid forward, while carefully steering clear of any comment that might inflame tensions with a direct La Liga rival.
Speaking to TV3 after Barça’s Joan Gamper Trophy outing, Yuste was pressed on the club’s pursuit of the Argentine, who has been strongly linked with a move to Montjuïc. Atlético, for their part, have been unwavering: Álvarez is not for sale.
Reports in Spain have suggested the player wants to leave Atlético Madrid, and Barcelona are clearly in the market for attacking reinforcements. The ingredients for a transfer storm are all there. Yuste, though, chose diplomacy over drama.
“I don’t like to talk about players who aren’t ours,” he said, stressing that Barcelona must show respect for a footballer still under contract at Atlético. He highlighted the long-standing relationship with Miguel Ángel Gil and president Enrique Cerezo, describing these situations as part and parcel of the game and insisting “we must maintain decorum and let common sense prevail,” as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
The message was clear: Barça will not wage this battle through the microphones.
For a moment, it sounded like the classic non-answer. Then came the admission that changes the tone of the story.
“We made an offer and that’s that,” Yuste stated, confirming that Barcelona had indeed put a proposal on the table for Álvarez, even if he stopped short of revealing whether it is still active or if another move is planned.
From there, he pivoted firmly back to the pitch.
“We must focus entirely on what Hansi said recently: that we have a match on Sunday and we have to go out and win it. There are 38 matches in La Liga and each one is worth three points, so we’re fully focused on trying to secure our first win,” he added.
The subtext is obvious: the transfer noise can rage on outside, but Hansi Flick’s priorities lie in the dugout, not the boardroom.
Market still alive at Barça
Yuste did not close the door on further business. Far from it.
He underlined that Barcelona remain open to strengthening before the window shuts, and took the opportunity to praise the work of the club’s sporting structure during the deal to sign Rodri.
“We have a great technical team, with Deco, Bojan and Alejandro Echeverría, who is also doing an exceptional job, and the transfer window is still open,” he said.
So the line from the Camp Nou offices is now unmistakable: the offer for Julián Álvarez existed, the respect for Atlético is non-negotiable, and the squad is still a work in progress.
Whether that mix leads to another push for the Argentine, or a different solution in attack, will define how bold Barcelona really are in this window.
