Liverpool plucked Bajcetic from Celta Vigo’s academy in December 2020, paying the LaLiga club around £224,000 for a 16-year-old they believed could anchor their midfield for years. By 2022/23, that vision looked spot on. The Spain Under-21 international made 19 appearances under Jurgen Klopp, impressed with his composure and bite, and earned a long-term contract that seemed to cement his place in the club’s future.

Then the momentum stalled.

A string of niggling injuries checked his rise. Minutes dried up. Loan spells followed. Last season, Liverpool sent him to Red Bull Salzburg and then to Las Palmas in search of rhythm and resilience. He has not played a single competitive minute for Liverpool since May 2024.

Now, with the window ticking down and Andoni Iraola reshaping the squad, Bajcetic stands on the verge of a full-circle move. According to Faro de Vigo, Celta Vigo have made him a priority target and talks have already taken place over a return, six years after he first left Galicia for Merseyside. The Spanish outlet describes him as “closer than ever to returning home” and say Celta “want him back.”

There is a catch. A big one.

Celta, it is claimed, need Liverpool to terminate the final year of his Anfield contract to make the deal work. No transfer fee, no complicated structure – just a clean break, with Bajcetic walking away as a free agent.

Liverpool are understood to be weighing that scenario up. With little prospect of a sizeable fee, the club are expected to explore a different kind of protection: inserting a future sell-on clause into any exit agreement so they still benefit if Bajcetic’s career takes off back in Spain.

For a player once tipped as a long-term pillar of Liverpool’s midfield, it would be a brutal, business-like end. For Celta, it could be the homecoming that reignites a stalled trajectory.

Ramsay heads to St Mirren as Liverpool door quietly closes

On the opposite flank of Liverpool’s planning board, another once-promising project has been nudged towards the exit.

Calvin Ramsay arrived from Aberdeen in June 2022 for £4.2m, billed as the energetic young right-back who could push Trent Alexander-Arnold and ease the load on Liverpool’s creative fulcrum. The idea was bold. The reality never caught up.

Ramsay managed just four senior appearances in a Liverpool shirt. Injuries and form undermined his chances, and when opportunities did arise, he never quite convinced he could hit the level required to be a long-term option at Anfield.

The club tried to find him minutes elsewhere. Loan spells at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock followed. Across all four moves, he totalled only 26 appearances, with his most sustained run coming at Wigan, where he featured 12 times in the 2024/25 campaign.

Now 21 and in the final year of his Liverpool contract, Ramsay has been sent out again, this time to St Mirren on a season-long loan. Liverpool have confirmed the move, and while there is no option to buy included, the implications are clear enough. With his deal expiring next summer, this loan effectively signals the end of his Liverpool career.

For St Mirren, it is a low-risk chance to revive a defender once viewed as one of Scotland’s brightest prospects. For Ramsay, it is more than that. It is an opportunity to strip things back, play regular football in the Scottish Premiership and prove that the early hype around his talent was not misplaced.
