Ayyoub Bouaddi: Manchester City's Rising Star

Manchester City have placed a heavyweight label on Ayyoub Bouaddi’s shoulders. For an 18-year-old, the expectations are enormous. The numbers back up the excitement: he has already surged past 100 senior competitive appearances.

His rise began at Lille, where he forced his way into first-team football early and stayed there. France quickly took notice. Bouaddi pulled on the national shirt at every youth level from U16 through to U21, a steady climb that underlined just how highly he was rated inside Clairefontaine.

Then came the twist.

Bouaddi switched international allegiance to Morocco, joining a generation that has pushed The Atlas Lions onto the global stage. With the 2026 World Cup on the horizon, his decision adds another layer of intrigue to a national team already brimming with ambition.

By the time that tournament came into view, his reputation had already outgrown Lille. A move to one of Europe’s heavyweights felt inevitable, only the destination was in doubt. The chase for his signature turned into a battle among the elite. Manchester City won it.

The Premier League champions see him as one of the standout young midfielders in the world game, and they have moved accordingly. Now, under Enzo Maresca, City are choosing patience. Bouaddi has been introduced from the bench twice, carefully fed into the pace and power of English football. Bouaddi himself sounds convinced he has landed in the right place. Speaking to the club’s official channels when the deal was completed, he did not hide what this move means to him.

“Manchester City are, for me, the best club in the world. It’s a dream to be here and be able to call myself a City player. I have spent most of my life working hard to become the best player I can be and reach the top of the game.

“I’ve watched City for many years, and I love their style of play. City always try and play quality football. And they have shown they are winners – this club feels like it’s built to win. The squad is world-class and Enzo is a top manager. And I’m really looking forward to playing at the Etihad Stadium, in front of all the fans.

“I have plenty of improving to do. I am only 18. I am happy with the progress I have made so far, but I also know I can improve so much. This is undoubtedly the best place for me to do that. This club demands trophies and I will give everything to make sure we are challenging for every title.”

Inside the club, the belief in his ceiling is just as strong.

The Blues’ director of football, Hugo Viana, did not hold back when outlining why City pushed so hard to secure him. “Ayyoub’s potential is extremely high - a player equipped with everything a top midfielder needs. At just 18, he already has outstanding football intelligence and that will only improve under the guidance of Enzo.

“We have watched him very, very closely and throughout that process we have become increasingly convinced he is a huge talent who will thrive at City. We are really happy he has joined us and our job now is to ensure we provide him with everything he needs to fulfil his potential.”

For now, Bouaddi waits for his first start, feeling his way into a squad stacked with champions. The spotlight will only grow harsher from here. The question is no longer whether he belongs at this level, but how quickly he can turn raw promise into the kind of dominance City clearly expect.
