Atletico Madrid and Villarreal to Gain Millions from Rodri's Transfer to Barcelona

The upcoming transfer of Rodri from Manchester City to Barcelona will trigger significant earnings for both Atletico Madrid and Villarreal thanks to FIFA's solidarity mechanism. This payment system redistributes part of the transfer fee to clubs involved in a player's development.

Barcelona and Manchester City Agree on Major Deal

Barcelona and Manchester City have reached an agreement for the transfer of the Spanish midfielder. The deal is reportedly worth an initial €65 million (£55m) fixed fee, plus up to €10 million (£8.5m) in performance-based bonuses. The 30-year-old midfielder is expected to join Barcelona during this summer window.

FIFA Solidarity Payments to Atletico Madrid

According to FIFA rules, 5% of any international transfer fee must be divided among the clubs responsible for training the player between ages 12 and 23. Atletico Madrid, where Rodri developed for seven years before leaving at 17, will receive at least €1.6 million (£1.3m) from the fixed fee portion alone. If all contract conditions are fulfilled, that amount could rise to around €2 million (£1.7m). Rodri's first youth club, Rayo Majadahonda, will not receive any payments since he left them before age 12.

Villarreal Also Benefits from the Transfer

Villarreal will claim a substantial share of the solidarity fund as well. Rodri spent five key seasons with them, including two years in their youth setup and three with their first team. He moved back to Atletico in 2018 before transferring to Manchester City a year later. Now, as Rodri heads to Barcelona, Villarreal anticipates a welcome financial boost from this unexpected payout.

The final details of Rodri's transfer to Barcelona are still being finalized, with an official announcement expected soon. Barcelona's head coach, Hansi Flick, looks forward to adding the experienced midfielder to his squad for the challenging season ahead in both domestic and European competitions.
