Atletico Madrid Intensifies Pursuit of Jorge Salinas
Atletico Madrid are making their move.
The Spanish giants have stepped up efforts to sign Racing Santander left-back Jorge Salinas, determined to get a deal over the line before Manchester United turn long-term interest into a concrete bid.
United’s recruitment team flagged Salinas months ago. The 19-year-old caught their eye during Racing’s promotion campaign, where he grew into a standout performer on the left side of defence as the Cantabrian club fought their way into LaLiga. Scouts were regulars at his games last season; the reports were consistently positive.
Then came the summer, and the scrutiny intensified.
Salinas spent three weeks with Spain at the European Under-19 Championship in Wales, a tournament United used to take an even closer look. Their scouts were in the stands throughout as the young defender played a key role in Spain’s run to the title, his performances reinforcing everything they had already logged: composure, energy, and the temperament to handle pressure on a big stage.
That body of work has left United weighing up whether to activate his €16million (£13.7m / $18.6m) release clause.
That figure only recently jumped. Racing’s promotion triggered a significant increase in the buyout, a change that cooled interest from Barcelona, who had previously considered Salinas as a long-term project signing before the clause doubled and the deal no longer fit their plans.
Atletico, though, see something different.
Rather than park him as a developmental piece, the Madrid club view Salinas as a player ready to step straight into their first-team squad. Talks have accelerated over the past month, particularly after Matteo Ruggeri was allowed to join Aston Villa, leaving a gap on the left that Diego Simeone’s side intend to fill quickly.
Club sources are acutely aware of the danger. Atletico know United have already been in contact with both Racing and the player’s representatives. The prospect of the Premier League side firming up their interest has sharpened Atletico’s urgency and pushed them to drive the negotiations harder, aiming to get ahead of any late surge from Old Trafford.
For United, Salinas is part of a wider left-back puzzle rather than the sole solution.
Lewis Hall of Newcastle remains their preferred option, and United are still pushing to prise him away from St James’ Park. Newcastle, however, are standing firm and have shown no inclination to sell, forcing United to keep alternative plans active.
Salinas has climbed that list. His age, price point and recent trajectory make him an increasingly appealing alternative as United look to reshape the position.
He is not the only name under consideration. RB Leipzig’s David Raum is also on their shortlist, while Club Brugge defender Joaquin Seys has been watched and assessed. Belgian sources, though, are adamant Seys will not be leaving this summer, narrowing the field.
That leaves the race for Salinas gathering pace.
Atletico are pushing to strike first, intent on locking down a defender they believe can contribute immediately. United, armed with months of scouting data and fresh memories from Wales, continue to deliberate over whether to pull the trigger on that €16million clause.
One club wants him now. The other must decide how long it can afford to wait.
