Atlético Madrid Sets Deadline for Julián Álvarez Amid Arsenal Interest

Atlético Madrid have drawn a line in the sand for Julián Álvarez. Decide by Sunday: stay put, or open the door to Arsenal.

For days, the forward has been at the centre of a transfer storm not of his own making. He has been told repeatedly, in public and in private, that a move to Barcelona is off the table. The club will not sell to Barça. They will not sell to Real Madrid either. That shuts down his preferred route and leaves him stuck in limbo.

Right now, Álvarez is said to be “struggling” and “confused” by the situation. Despite Premier League champions Arsenal lurking as a serious option, he has not yet shown any real willingness to embrace a return to England.

From Arsenal’s side, the mood is calm, almost cold. As of Thursday, nothing had shifted. Inside the club, the belief remains that it is unlikely Álvarez will join them. Until he signals clear enthusiasm for becoming part of Mikel Arteta’s project, they will not even open formal negotiations. No green light from the player, no move from Arsenal.

In Spain, those close to the situation sense the same drift. The longer Álvarez delays, the more likely he stays exactly where he is: an Atlético player, wrestling with a future he did not quite plan.

He will not be involved this weekend. Diego Simeone has confirmed Álvarez will miss the game against Sevilla after failing to train for the last three days. For a player of his intensity, that absence is telling.

“[Julián] is really struggling. There were people who misled him, who left him confused, and the truth is that I deeply regret it,” he said.

“I know him, I've been working with him for some time, and he is a great person, a great professional and an excellent footballer.

“He is completely confused and, at the moment, he is going through a very difficult situation, both personally and professionally.”

A club usually keeps this kind of turmoil behind closed doors. Here, the anguish is out in the open.

Arteta shuts down the noise

Back in London, Arteta is not feeding the speculation.

Asked directly on Thursday about Arsenal’s interest in the former Manchester City forward, he refused to bite. What he did address was the impact of constant transfer rumours on his own dressing room.

“Very simple. Whatever you read, if you have a question, come and knock on my door, and I will tell you whether it is true or not,” he said.

He then painted a picture of just how wild the rumour mill has become.

“Because a player in any position, if they read it, we could put a catalogue on the walls about all the players that we wanted in the last three months, and we would need the whole building.

“They know that there's so much speculation. So if ever they feel the doubt of what we think about them, and if we're going to recruit a player, I tell them straight away.

“And if we're going to sign somebody in their position, I normally tell them. I say: ‘These are the plans and the reasons. We still believe in you, but the competition is going to increase’. I prefer to do it that way.”

It is a clear message: Arsenal will act, but on their terms, and with their players fully briefed.

A narrow market and a possible stepping stone

For Álvarez, the options are shrinking.

South American football expert Tim Vickery, speaking on Sky Sports News, framed the dilemma bluntly: “It is up to Atlético. They have two options: do they want to keep a player who doesn't want to be there? Or do they want to cash in?”

With Barcelona and Real Madrid effectively off limits, the list of potential buyers at his price bracket is short.

“That does not leave them with many options; who else could afford him? The other options are in the Premier League. I'm not sure he was wildly happy during his time in England. He has got himself in a place where there are not many options,” Vickery said.

Arsenal, though, offer something different: a story, a stage, a shot at history.

“Arsenal would give a fantastic narrative. Why not try to be part of the first Champions League at Arsenal? Why not be a part of that? And, depending on the terms of the contract, Arsenal could be a stepping stone to Barcelona. But it is up to Atlético.”

For the club, there is also the question of reconciliation. Could Álvarez simply walk back into the Metropolitano if nothing materialises?

“I am told that the fans would probably take him back if he has to go back to Atlético. He is a wonderful player, a striker with the soul of a midfielder,” Vickery added.

So the clock ticks down to Sunday. Atlético want clarity. Arsenal wait for a signal. And Álvarez, caught between ambition and reality, has to decide which path will define the next peak of his career.
