Atlético Madrid Blocks Barcelona's Move for Julián Álvarez

Atlético Madrid have slammed the door on Barcelona’s pursuit of Julián Álvarez – and bolted it shut.

Club chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has already insisted the forward will “never, ever” be sold to Barça, and the board doubled down with a rare, pointed statement. They accused Barcelona of failing to act in a “professional, ethical and respectful manner” and confirmed there will be “zero consideration” of any deal with the Catalan club.

The standoff now has a clock on it. Atlético have set a deadline of today for Álvarez’s future to be resolved so they still have time to sign a replacement before the window closes.

The 26-year-old Argentina international is understood to favour Barcelona, but that route has been completely blocked. He has been told there is a “zero per cent chance” of joining them and has now missed training for two consecutive days, officially due to “illness” after being booed during a substitute appearance in Sunday’s draw with Villarreal.

Arsenal, who have made Álvarez their top attacking target, are watching closely and weighing up a late move. With Barça out of the equation, the Gunners suddenly look like the most realistic escape route if the stand-off in Madrid breaks.

Liverpool close on Barcola and push for Sarr as Gakpo future hangs

At Anfield, Liverpool are moving aggressively.

The club have agreed a £100m fee with Paris Saint-Germain for Bradley Barcola, with a further £20m in potential add-ons after PSG dropped their demands for the 23-year-old forward. Barcola is one of two wide players manager Andoni Iraola wants through the door before the deadline.

The other is Ismaila Sarr. Liverpool have already seen an opening offer of around £50m rejected by Crystal Palace but are still in pursuit, undeterred by the initial knock-back. Having moved away from a deal for Brighton’s Yankuba Minteh, Sarr remains firmly on their list.

All of this leaves Cody Gakpo in a precarious position. Tottenham are pushing hard and Manchester City have also shown interest. Asked directly whether Gakpo would stay, Iraola refused to offer any guarantees.

“When the market is open, you cannot guarantee anything with anyone,” he said. If Barcola and Sarr both arrive, Liverpool’s forward line will look very different – and Gakpo could be the high-profile casualty before Tuesday’s deadline.

Chelsea ready to cash in on Enzo as Martínez deal agreed

Across west London, Chelsea are preparing for a major midfield decision.

The club are open to selling Enzo Fernández for the right price, with Manchester City circling. No formal talks have taken place yet, but Chelsea’s stance is clear: any sale must come with the means to strengthen the squad immediately in a fast-closing window.
