Aston Villa Sign PSG Starlet Ibrahim Mbaye for €55m

Aston Villa have muscled in on one of Europe’s most coveted teenagers, striking an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign Ibrahim Mbaye – the winger Liverpool had earmarked as a potential Mohamed Salah heir.

The 18-year-old is heading for the Premier League, but not to Anfield. Liverpool explored a move as part of their long-term planning for life after Salah, only to walk away when PSG’s demands climbed too high.

PSG shifted their valuation throughout the summer depending on who was at the table. Liverpool were quoted around €70 million. There was a feeling that number might soften, but the club decided against being dragged into a prolonged negotiation and turned their full attention to landing top target Bradley Barcola instead.

That decision opened the door for Villa. They didn’t hesitate.

Villa pounce as PSG soften stance

Unai Emery’s side have admired Mbaye for some time. Villa pushed in January, only to be knocked back when PSG refused to sell mid-season. Mbaye stayed, but his situation changed quickly.

The Senegal international returned from the Africa Cup of Nations in the second half of last season and found minutes hard to come by. According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have now agreed a €55 million fee with PSG, a deal smoothed by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris.

The transfer is in the final stages of being completed, with Mbaye expected to sign a long-term contract at Villa Park. For the Birmingham club, this is not a panic buy. Ornstein’s report makes clear Mbaye has been a long-term target, monitored and pursued over multiple windows.

A teenager with serious mileage

For an 18-year-old, Mbaye arrives with a résumé that most prospects can only dream of. He has already made 42 senior appearances for PSG, operating in one of the most pressurised environments in European football. On top of that, he has represented Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter and at the World Cup this summer.

That kind of exposure explains the fee. Villa are not paying for potential alone; they are paying for a player who has already lived inside elite dressing rooms and major tournaments, yet still has years of development ahead of him.

His reduced role after AFCON made a parting of ways almost inevitable. For Mbaye, the move offers the chance to become a central figure rather than a rotation option. For Emery, it delivers the extra winger he has been pushing for.

Leao talks stall, Mbaye deal lands

Villa’s search for attacking reinforcements has not been straightforward. The club held talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, but indications are that the Portuguese star has opted for Galatasaray instead, unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal.

That setback could have left a hole in Villa’s plans. Instead, the agreement for Mbaye arrives at exactly the right moment, giving Emery a high-upside wide player with Champions League and international experience before his 19th birthday.
