Aston Villa hijack Liverpool’s move for PSG starlet Ibrahim Mbaye in €55m coup

Liverpool have spent the summer tracking Ibrahim Mbaye as a safety net. Now they’ve lost him to a Premier League rival just as their main target edges closer.

While the Reds finally received the green light on Thursday for Bradley Barcola’s £100 million move from Paris Saint-Germain to Anfield, Aston Villa stepped in from the blind side and snatched Mbaye. The 18-year-old Senegalese winger will join the Birmingham club from PSG for €55 million ($64 million) in one of the window’s sharpest pieces of business.

Villa’s move comes with the club awash with funds after cashing in on several key names, including Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa. That money has been quickly recycled into a sweeping rebuild – and Mbaye now sits at the heart of it.

For Liverpool, the timing stings. Barcola’s deal may be agreed in principle, but it is not done. The France international still needs to complete his medical and formally sign. Any late hitch, and the Reds have just seen one of their primary alternatives disappear.

The Mbaye chase had already been complicated. RMC Sport reported last week that Liverpool and PSG were far apart on the teenager’s valuation, echoing the tense negotiations over Barcola. PSG wanted closer to £60 million ($82 million) for Mbaye. Liverpool rated him nearer £43 million ($59 million).

In the end, Aston Villa landed him for €55 million ($64 million) – a fee that sits far nearer Liverpool’s number than PSG’s original demand.

David Ornstein of The Athletic confirmed on Friday that Villa had reached an agreement with PSG. The Midlands club have tracked Mbaye since January, but for months they looked like outsiders, lurking behind heavyweight suitors and long-term admirers such as Liverpool.

Mbaye’s rise in Paris has been rapid. He joined PSG in 2018 at the age of 10 from FC Versailles 78, the same grassroots club where Thierry Henry once played before heading to Monaco. By 16, Mbaye had become the youngest player ever to start for PSG, breaking into Luis Enrique’s first-team squad and staying there.

The winger made 39 appearances in the 2024 season for a PSG side that has now won back-to-back Champions League titles, showcasing his pace, flair, and composure on the biggest stage. On the international front, he featured as a rotation option for Senegal at the 2026 World Cup, scoring against France in the group stage – a breakout moment that underlined his pedigree.

As transfer rumours swirled, Enrique left Mbaye out of the matchday squad for PSG’s opening Ligue 1 fixture, a clear signal that a move was in motion. Villa read it perfectly.

Unai Emery’s side are in the middle of a dramatic reset after lifting the 2026 Europa League. The spine of that triumph has been ripped out. Rogers has gone to Manchester City, Konsa to Arsenal, Watkins to Al Hilal, Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, Emiliano Martinez to Chelsea, Lucas Digne to PSG, with Tammy Abraham also expected to depart for Ipswich Town.

In their place, Villa have gone bold. Jordi Manzambi has arrived from Freiburg, Alejandro Garnacho from Chelsea, Zion Suzuki from Parma, Joao Gomes from Wolves, Matteo Ruggeri from Atletico Madrid, Leon Goretzka from Bayern Munich, Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham, and more. Mbaye now joins that influx as the statement attacking signing – young, explosive, and already tested at elite level.

Liverpool, meanwhile, must hope Barcola’s transfer crosses the line without drama. If anything goes wrong, Mbaye – the backup plan they spent all summer cultivating – will be lining up in claret and blue instead of red.
