Julian Alvarez Transfer Saga: Arsenal's Pursuit Intensifies
Julian Alvarez has been sitting right at the top of Arsenal’s attacking wish list. Now the transfer saga has taken a fresh twist.
Arteta on the phone, Alvarez open to move
Reports in Spain say Mikel Arteta has spoken directly with the Atletico Madrid forward about a switch to the Emirates Stadium. The Arsenal manager is understood to have made contact as he looks to add one more decisive piece to a squad already rebuilt at huge cost this summer.
From Madrid, the message is the same: Alvarez is open to the idea.
The 22-year-old was left out of Atletico’s La Liga opener against Malaga, with Diego Simeone admitting his player was not in the right frame of mind to feature. For a fanbase that has already started to turn, it was another sign that something is shifting.
Alvarez was whistled by sections of his own support during Atletico’s first league game of the new campaign. The tension around his future is no longer in the background; it is on the pitch, in the stands, and now in the transfer market.
Asked about the forward’s situation after those hostilities, Simeone chose his words carefully: “We always aim to secure the best possible tools, just as we’ve always had. And, well, let’s hope we can assemble the best possible squad between now and the deadline.”
No guarantees. No firm commitment. Just a coach who knows the window can still rip up his plans.
Barcelona in the wings, Arsenal in the race
Barcelona have also been circling. The Camp Nou is believed to be Alvarez’s dream destination, and Atletico have long bristled at the idea of strengthening a direct rival. That reluctance has left the door ajar.
Arsenal are trying to walk through it.
Diario AS report that Arteta’s conversations with Alvarez have focused on a potential summer move to north London, where the Premier League champions are intent on adding more firepower to defend their title. A dream of Barcelona does not mean Arsenal are out of the picture. Not yet.
A squad already reshaped
Arteta has not exactly stood still this summer.
Ezri Konsa became the latest arrival after completing a £51million move from Aston Villa, adding depth and experience to the heart of defence. He joins a recruitment drive headlined by the £75million signing of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, a statement deal that followed the additions of Piero Hincapie and Christos Tzolis. Hincapie’s move from Bayer Leverkusen was made permanent after his loan spell at the Emirates last season.
Even with those reinforcements, Arteta made it clear before Arsenal’s opening Premier League fixture that he still wants more.
Speaking about Konsa’s arrival, the Spaniard laid out the logic behind the deal and the wider transfer push: “We needed one more player, we had seven players in the defensive line, we know that that's not enough. We have two long-term injuries, one with Jurrien (Timber), and one with Willy (Saliba).
“And we wanted someone that didn't have the qualities that we already have, so somebody ideally with experience, because as a centre-back in this league you cannot play jokes, we know how important that position is, and I think Ezri brings a lot of qualities that we needed.”
The message was unmistakable. Arsenal are champions, but they are not satisfied.
Champions start strong – and still want more
On the pitch, the title defence began with authority. Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all found the net in a comfortable 3-0 win over Coventry City at the Emirates, a performance that suggested Arsenal have carried last season’s rhythm straight into the new campaign.
Yet even as the goals went in, attention kept drifting back to the market.
Arteta has his core. He has his midfield general in Bruno Guimaraes, extra steel and balance in defence with Konsa and Hincapie, and attacking depth with Tzolis. What he does not yet have is that one more forward who can tilt tight games, stretch defences, and share the load with the existing stars.
That is where Alvarez comes in.
Atletico are under pressure, the player is unsettled, and Barcelona’s hands are partially tied by their own financial and political constraints. Arsenal see an opening. Arteta has already picked up the phone.
The clock is ticking toward the deadline. Does this window end with Alvarez in red and white in north London, or does his dream of the Camp Nou hold firm?
