Arsenal's Plan for Chido Obi-Martin Dowman: No Loan Move Yet

Arsenal intend to keep 16-year-old Carabao Cup sensation Chido Obi-Martin Dowman close to home for now, despite early interest in a loan move once he turns 17.

The forward underlined his growing reputation with a brace against Ipswich in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, another sharp reminder of how quickly he is adapting when handed first-team chances.

Clubs have already sounded Arsenal out over a potential loan in January, when Dowman becomes eligible to move temporarily after his 17th birthday at the end of December. For the moment, the answer from north London is simple: not yet.

Mikel Arteta stressed that Arsenal went into this season with a firm plan to keep Dowman in-house.

“We haven't really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have him in the squad,” Arteta said. “That we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there. We will evaluate every six months, where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision.”

That six-month review is central to Arsenal’s thinking. Dowman’s pathway is not fixed in stone, and Arteta left the door open to a change of stance if circumstances shift around the turn of the year.

Arteta also made it clear he has no ideological objection to sending a 17-year-old out on loan. His own story proves it. He left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain at the same age and knows how much the right move can accelerate a career.

“There have been many cases of that age when they have gone out and been successful and others not,” he said. “In my particular case I was 17 when I went to Paris. It depends on the atmosphere that you find there and how much the coach believes in you, whether you go there just to be part of a squad or play minutes. Which country, it depends.”

The nuance matters. Arsenal want to avoid a token move where Dowman simply trains and watches. Any loan must deliver real minutes and the right environment, not just a new badge on his shirt.

Recent history offers a live example. After three years around the first team, Arsenal decided to send Ethan Nwaneri to Marseille for the second half of last season, a move shaped by similar questions over game time, squad depth and development.

“It depends on a lot of factors – what he needs and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes,” Arteta said.

For now, Dowman’s minutes – and the quality of them – are coming in an Arsenal shirt. The real decision looms in six months’ time.
