Arsenal's Transfer Ambitions Under Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta knows exactly what he wants – and how hard it will be to get it.

Fresh from Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Como on Wednesday, the Premier League champions’ manager cut a realistic figure about the transfer market. He stressed that only a tiny group of players on the planet can now walk into his starting XI and raise the level, but made it clear the club are still hunting a headline signing before the window closes.

“There are very few players in the market that are available” who can improve the team’s fine margins, Arteta said, before adding a crucial line: “We are actively looking to improve that and we're going to try.”

Arsenal chase a marquee name

Arsenal’s summer has already carried the weight of expectation. They have been linked with some of Europe’s biggest attacking talents, missing out on Vinicius Jr after the Brazilian committed his future to Real Madrid. Attention has now swung towards Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez and Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola.

Either deal would be complicated. Both clubs would demand huge fees and Arsenal know they would need to go well beyond the £75 million they paid to prise Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes away from St James’ Park.

The champions, though, are prepared to play the long game. Arteta underlined that the club will move if the right opportunity appears.

“Every time we have an opportunity to improve the squad and bring more quality and depth to the squad, we need to do that,” he said. “We are actively trying to do so. The thing in the market is that it doesn't just depend on you. We are very clear on that.”

That last line matters. Arsenal may be champions, armed with money and momentum, but they are still operating in a market where selling clubs hold power and elite talent is scarce.

Lewis-Skelly shines amid uncertainty

On the pitch in Como, one of the standout moments belonged to Myles Lewis-Skelly. The 19-year-old produced an emotional celebration after scoring, a reaction that carried extra weight given reports that Arsenal have offered him to Manchester United and Chelsea.

Arteta, though, refused to be drawn into the speculation.

“I'm not going to talk about any speculation,” he said. “If there is a speculation about our player, it's a good sign. That means that we attract attention and they're doing a good job.”

Lewis-Skelly has impressed his manager over the summer, not least because he has been asked to adapt. With several midfielders away on international duty, the teenager has been used more as a No 6 than in his usual role.

“I think he had a really good pre-season,” Arteta said. “I think we asked him to play in a different position, because he played more as a six, because we lacked central midfielders, obviously with international duties, and I think he had a really consistent pre-season.”

So Arsenal stand at an intriguing point in their summer. A squad strong enough to retain a title. A manager demanding even more. A transfer market offering only a handful of players who can genuinely shift the needle.

Whether one of those lands in north London before the window shuts may define how far this team can stretch its dominance.
