Arsenal Signs Gibraltar Winger Jamie Scanlon in Youth Revamp

Arsenal are set to raid Manchester United’s youth ranks again, with 19-year-old winger Jamie Scanlon poised to join the club as part of their aggressive rebuild at Under-21 level.

The Gunners have moved quickly for the Gibraltar international, who has been on United’s books since 2021 and has attracted interest across Europe. Standard Sport understands Scanlon will arrive on a free transfer, with United inserting a 40 per cent sell-on clause into the deal. The move underlines how highly the Old Trafford club still rate his potential, even as they let him leave.

Scanlon has already completed his medical and the two clubs are expected to finalise the transfer within the next 48 hours.

No loan, no half measures. Arsenal have no immediate plans to send him out for experience. Instead, he will start with the Under-21s, but the message around the move is clear: he is joining with the intention of forcing his way into Mikel Arteta’s first-team thinking as quickly as he can.

For a teenager, Scanlon already carries serious international mileage. He has been capped 24 times at senior level by Gibraltar, exposure that has sharpened his profile and drawn attention from clubs in Spain in particular. Sevilla pushed hard to sign him permanently in January, only for United to block that move and send him to Swindon Town on loan for the second half of last season.

Arsenal’s interest is not blind. New Under-21 head coach David Horseman knows exactly what he is getting. He worked briefly with Scanlon during his time at United and strongly recommended him to the Gunners’ hierarchy. That endorsement has been backed up by positive reports from Chris Perkins, who oversaw academy recruitment at Derby County while Scanlon was moving through their age groups before his switch to Manchester.

The transfer continues a growing theme. Scanlon will follow Habeeb Ogunneye in making the journey from Old Trafford to north London. Like Scanlon, Ogunneye has joined Arsenal on a free, again with a significant sell-on clause attached.

It is all part of a deliberate reset. Inside Arsenal, there has been a renewed push to raise the standard and depth of the Under-21 squad, turning it into a more direct pipeline to Arteta’s senior side rather than a holding pen.

The recruitment drive is gathering momentum. On Tuesday, 18-year-old striker Igor Tyjon confirmed he will be leaving Blackburn Rovers after Arsenal finally secured his signature.
