Arsenal Acquire Brazil Midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle

Arsenal, the reigning Premier League champions, have officially signed Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for a reported £75 million ($101.2 million), as confirmed by both clubs on Saturday.

Guimaraes, 28, who captained Newcastle and spent four and a half seasons there, has committed to a long-term deal with the Gunners. Arsenal ended a 22-year wait for a top-tier English league title last season, and Guimaraes represents their most notable signing this transfer window. He joins fellow new signings Illan Meslier and Christos Tzolis at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta commented on the addition: "With Bruno joining us, we are further strengthening the heart of our team. Bruno can operate as a defensive midfielder or a box-to-box player. He blends quality and endurance, consistently delivering goals and assists."

Berta added that Guimaraes will help manager Mikel Arteta develop Arsenal's style of play and boost internal competition, which is key to aiming for major trophies.

The exact transfer fee was undisclosed, but Newcastle revealed it ranks among the top 10 highest fees ever received for a player aged 28 or above.

Guimaraes had been linked with Arsenal previously in January 2022 before moving from Lyon to Newcastle. Now, he reunites with Arteta in London after scoring 31 goals in 195 appearances for Newcastle. Under Eddie Howe, Guimaraes played a vital role in ending Newcastle’s 54-year major trophy drought by winning the 2023 League Cup.

"This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I arrived, the club was in a challenging position and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together," Guimaraes said in a statement. "I fell in love with this place. I really mean that."

Eddie Howe recently resigned as Newcastle manager and was replaced by German coach Matthias Jaissle.

Future Prospects at Arsenal

Guimaraes, who represented Brazil at the recent World Cup, will compete for midfield spots alongside Declan Rice, Myles Lewis-Skelly, Martin Zubimendi, and Mikel Merino.

Arsenal will begin their season facing Manchester City in the Community Shield next Sunday, followed by their Premier League title defense against newly promoted Coventry five days later. Newcastle will open their campaign at home against Liverpool on August 23.
