Atlético have made it clear they will not sell to Barcelona, their direct La Liga rivals, yet Álvarez’s stance has not shifted.

Mikel Arteta spoke to Álvarez last week in a direct attempt to lure the former Manchester City striker back to the Premier League. The message that came back was blunt: his priority is Barcelona and nobody else.

Barcelona, for their part, have already struck an £8.6m agreement to sign Gabriel Jesus, who is in the final year of his contract at Arsenal and has slipped behind Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres in the pecking order. That deal underlines how far Jesus’s status has fallen at the Emirates, but it does not close the door on Álvarez.

The Spanish champions want another attacker after selling Ferran Torres to Paris Saint‑Germain and are understood not to have abandoned their pursuit of Álvarez, despite Atlético’s stance.

Atlético hold firm as market shifts

Atlético have moved to protect themselves, agreeing a deal with Juventus for Jonathan David on an initial loan with an option to buy the Canada forward next summer. Even with that safety net in place, they are determined to keep Álvarez, who joined from Manchester City in 2024 and is seen as central to their plans.

That leaves Arsenal in an awkward limbo. They remain hopeful the 26‑year‑old could yet be persuaded to change his mind, but the clock is ticking and the squad is already being dismantled around the forward line.

Arsenal’s attacking reset

Arsenal’s summer up front is starting to look like a clear-out with a gamble attached. Gabriel Martinelli, Jesus and Fábio Vieira are all heading for the exit in deals that reshape Arteta’s attacking options and wage bill in one sweep.

Martinelli’s move is the headline departure. Al‑Hilal are set to pay a club‑record £56m for the Brazilian, who lit up the Champions League last season with six goals but managed only one in the Premier League. His fee surpasses the £40m Liverpool paid Arsenal for Alex Oxlade‑Chamberlain in 2017, underlining just how much his stock has risen despite a flat domestic campaign.

Jesus’s cut‑price switch to Barcelona and Vieira’s situation add to the churn. Vieira, who spent last season on loan at Hamburg, is poised to join the German club permanently in an £8.6m deal.

Arteta has already moved to plug some of the gaps. Christos Tzolis has arrived to replace Leandro Trossard on the left flank, while Eberechi Eze offers another option out wide and between the lines. Yet Martinelli’s exit would still leave a significant hole in terms of pace and direct threat, especially if Álvarez cannot be prised away from Madrid.

Targets slipping away

Arsenal’s recruitment team have been working through a list of alternatives, but the market has not been kind. Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye featured prominently on that shortlist, only for Tottenham to move into advanced talks over a £60m deal for the Senegal forward.

Another option vanished when Morgan Rogers chose Chelsea, while an ambitious move for Vinícius Júnior never got off the ground, the Brazil star instead signing a contract extension at Real Madrid.

One by one, the potential solutions have disappeared. The pressure on the Álvarez pursuit grows with every missed target.

Arsenal have money in hand, spaces opening in the squad and a manager willing to reshape his attack. The question is whether they can find the marquee forward to justify tearing it all up – or whether Álvarez’s Barcelona dream will leave them scrambling for a Plan B in the final days of the window.
