Arsenal’s Max Dowman at a Career Crossroads

Mikel Arteta is weighing up whether to take Arsenal’s brightest teenage talent out of the spotlight just as he starts to light it up.

Max Dowman, the 16-year-old who stunned the Premier League last season by becoming its youngest-ever goalscorer, could be sent out on loan in January despite his growing impact in north London.

Arsenal’s teenage jewel at a crossroads

Dowman has risen rapidly through Arsenal’s academy, forcing his way into the first-team squad and into the consciousness of supporters who are desperate to see more of him. An England Under-19 international who can play as a No. 10 or off the flank, he has already delivered three goals and one assist in 14 senior appearances in all competitions.

Yet he has not played a single Premier League minute for the reigning champions this season.

His reminder of what he can do came on Tuesday night. Dowman struck twice in a 4-2 League Cup win over Ipswich Town, a performance that reignited calls from the Emirates stands for a bigger role in the weeks ahead.

Arteta heard those calls. He also knows the reality of squad management at a club chasing major honours.

Arteta opens the door to a January loan

Speaking to BBC Sport, the Arsenal manager laid out the club’s thinking on Dowman’s immediate future – and left the door firmly open to a loan move when the window opens.

“We will evaluate every six months where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision,” Arteta said. “It depends on a lot of factors.

“What he needs, and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes.

“We have to be open, but now the focus is to be here and to impact the team.”

That line will sting some Arsenal fans. They know they have a gem and want to see him polished at the Emirates, not somewhere else. But Arteta stressed that, up to now, the plan has been to keep Dowman close.

“We haven’t really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have Max in the squad, that we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there.”

Lessons from Paris and the loan dilemma

Arteta has lived this decision from the inside. As a teenager, he left Barcelona to go on loan to Paris Saint-Germain, a move that shaped his own career.

“There have been many cases of that age when they have gone out and been successful and others not,” he said. “In my particular case, I was 17 when I went to Paris [St-Germain].

“It depends on the atmosphere that you find there, and how much the coach believes in you as to whether you go there just to be part of a squad or play minutes.

“Which country, it depends. But now he is in a good place, let’s keep him here.”

That last sentence captures the tension at the heart of the Dowman debate. Arsenal believe he is in the right environment. They also know the clock is ticking on how long a talent of this level will accept cameo roles and cup cameos.

Knocking on the door the hard way

Next up is Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League on Saturday, and Dowman’s name is already being pushed towards the teamsheet by fans. Arteta made it clear there is only one way the teenager can force that decision.

“The best way to knock on the door is to do it on the pitch, not in the office,” he said. “Then you just leave out the arguments.

“When a player delivers constantly on the pitch, every single day in training, that’s the best way, that’s the best signal for the manager. That’s the best signal for his teammates, too.

“And what Max did the other day, alongside all the other players as well that haven’t played many minutes this season, was really impressive.”

Impressive enough to stay and fight for minutes, or impressive enough to earn a loan that accelerates his rise? Arsenal have a few weeks to decide how bold they want to be with a 16-year-old who already looks too big for the shadows.
