Arsenal's Christos Tzolis Impresses as a Key Signing

Arsenal’s new winger Christos Tzolis is barely a month into his Premier League career, and already the chorus of approval stretches from London to Bruges and beyond.

The £34m summer signing from Club Brugge has hit the ground sprinting at the Emirates, helping the reigning Premier League champions open the season with four wins from four ahead of their Champions League opener against Napoli on Wednesday. Inside the club, the verdict is blunt: they think they’ve bought a star.

Arsenal rave about their “ready-made” winger

Tzolis, 24, arrived in July on a long-term deal after Mikel Arteta green-lit a reshuffle in his forward line, sanctioning the exit of Leandro Trossard and putting Gabriel Martinelli up for sale. Arteta wanted a winger who could raise the bar technically and mentally. Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta said as much when the deal was done, insisting the Greece international would “raise the technical level of our squad” and bring a “strong mentality to our team”.

The early evidence is backing that up. Training-ground whispers have turned into open admiration.

At last month’s Champions League draw in Monaco, Arsenal officials bumped into their counterparts from Club Brugge. What followed was less small talk, more glowing report.

Bart Verhaeghe, president of the Belgian club, revealed just how effusive the praise was.

“At the Champions League draw, I saw people from Arsenal and they showed a tremendous amount of respect,” Verhaeghe told Het Belang van Limburg. “‘What a player you’ve delivered’, they told me. They said he has an excellent attitude, is the best in the physical tests and is a great guy, too.”

The message was the same in another interview with Het Laatste Nieuws. Verhaeghe said Arsenal’s staff again greeted him with the same refrain: “what a player”.

“Christos had come out on top in all the tests,” he said. “That’s what we do here: deliver a ready-made product. Because we know what those top teams are looking for. We prepare our players for that kind of football.”

Brugge’s “holistic” gamble pays off

Verhaeghe used the Tzolis deal as a case study in Club Brugge’s long-term strategy. The Belgian side have been mocked in the past for their detailed, data-heavy and lifestyle-focused methods. They are not laughing now.

“Back then, people laughed at our holistic approach to nutrition, sleep, special glasses… Today, it’s all standard practice. We were the innovators from day one, and we’ll keep innovating,” he said.

The pipeline tells its own story. “Today, we’re selling players to Arsenal and Inter Milan, two teams that have reached the Champions League final in the last two years,” Verhaeghe added. “And at the same time, we’re recruiting directly from the Premier League, from a club like West Ham. 10 years ago, that was unthinkable.”

Tzolis, in that sense, is both a flagship sale for Brugge and a test case for Arsenal’s recruitment under Arteta and Berta. So far, both sides are delighted.

“Beating everyone”: Tzolis sets the standard

Inside the Arsenal dressing room, the respect is already there. Ben White lifted the lid on just how dominant Tzolis has been behind the scenes.

“Christos has been amazing,” the England defender said last month. “He came in, did all the testing, and beat everyone.

“So he is fitting in really well and everyone is really happy for him to be here.”

Those physical numbers have been matched by what Arsenal’s staff are seeing in training: intensity, repeat runs, and a willingness to graft without the ball. For a team that lives off high pressing and quick transitions, that matters as much as a flashy first touch.

Ferdinand’s bold prediction

Outside the club, the hype is starting to build. Rio Ferdinand has already nailed his colours to the mast, calling Tzolis his early pick for signing of the season.

“Who is the best signing of the transfer window? From what I’ve seen so far, I’m going to go for Tzolis,” the former Manchester United defender said on his YouTube channel.

“For the price you got him for, £35m, from what I’ve seen, jinky little winger, great vision, making good decisions in the final third.

“I think, great bit of business done by the recruitment team at Arsenal. I’m going to go early, I’m going to say he’s going to be my signing of the season, as in terms of value, and in terms of what he does.”

The numbers will come under the microscope as the season wears on, especially with Arsenal expected to go deep in both the Premier League title race and the Champions League. The first big European examination arrives against Napoli.

Tzolis has already passed the tests in the lab and on the training pitch. The next question is simple: can he carry that supremacy onto the biggest stage, under the heaviest lights?
