Anthony Martial's Potential Return to LaLiga with Málaga

Anthony Martial is closing in on an unexpected new chapter in Spain, with Málaga pushing to bring the free agent back into LaLiga.

According to Santi Aouna of Foot Mercato, the Andalusian club are deep in talks with the 30-year-old forward, who has been without a team for two months following the termination of his contract at CF Monterrey. Aouna reported on X that “Málaga are in advanced negotiations with Anthony Martial,” adding that discussions are progressing and an agreement is “close.”

For Málaga, freshly promoted and already feeling the strain of top-flight life, this is a bold move. Back in LaLiga after years away, they have taken just three points so far and sit 18th. They need quality, experience, and a bit of star power. Martial, even after a turbulent few years, still offers all three on paper.

His recent track, though, tells a different story to the one many once expected.

Last season, Martial turned up in Mexico with Monterrey, a deal initially set to run until mid-2027. It never came close to that. The club terminated his contract in July for reasons that have not been made clear publicly. On the pitch, his impact was modest: 20 games, one goal, three assists. For a player once billed as one of Europe’s most explosive attacking talents, the numbers only underlined the sense of drift.

The contrast with his early years is stark. A dazzling breakthrough at AS Monaco turned him into one of the hottest properties in Europe. Manchester United moved decisively, paying at least €60 million to prise him from the principality, and his start at Old Trafford suggested the fee might even prove a bargain. He scored on his debut, lit up the Premier League with his direct running, and looked every inch the future of United’s attack.

Then the progress stalled. Seasons blurred into one another. Form dipped, confidence ebbed, and the club’s constant upheaval did him no favours. A loan to Sevilla was meant to reset his career but fell flat, offering little evidence that he could rediscover his old edge. By 2024, United cut ties altogether, terminating his contract while he was injured and only months from its natural expiry.

What followed has been a restless search for belonging. Martial joined AEK Athens and, for a brief spell, found his touch again, scoring nine goals. Yet even there, the relationship cooled quickly and the club moved to offload him. The switch to Monterrey promised a fresh start on another continent; that, too, ended abruptly.

Now comes Málaga, and with it perhaps a final chance to reboot his career in one of Europe’s major leagues.

For the club, it is a calculated gamble: a player with 30 caps for France, still only 30, available without a transfer fee and hungry for relevance. For Martial, it is something else entirely — a shot at proving that his story is not just about what might have been, but what still could be.
