Amit Bhatia's First Appearance as Liverpool Vice-Chairman
Amit Bhatia will make his first appearance at Anfield as Liverpool’s new vice-chairman on Saturday, as the Reds open their home Premier League campaign against Nottingham Forest under Andoni Iraola.
The 46-year-old businessman, who left QPR last month after an 18-year stint as co-owner and director, now fronts 1892 Holdings – the consortium that has bought around 38 per cent of Liverpool from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in a deal worth just over £2bn.
This is not a quiet, background role. Based in London and already well versed in English football boardrooms, Bhatia is expected to become the most visible face of the new investors at Anfield, far more prominent than other members of the group or FSG’s existing hierarchy.
Behind him stands serious money. The consortium features Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, both billionaires operating from opposite sides of the globe – Bezos in the United States, Saverin in Singapore. Their physical distance means Bhatia will effectively carry the flag on matchdays.
He will also take a seat on an expanded Liverpool board. Joining him will be Elaine Saverin, wife of Eduardo Saverin, and Bryan Baum, who represents Bezos through K5 Sports, the venture capital firm Baum founded. It marks a notable reshaping of the club’s power structure, even with FSG retaining majority control.
The deal is not fully over the line yet. It still requires clearance from the new Independent Football Regulator, and all involved must pass the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test before the stake is formally locked in.
When FSG announced the sale of the minority stake to 1892 Holdings, Bhatia made his intentions clear.
“We are incredibly proud to be investing in Liverpool Football Club and to be doing so alongside FSG,” he said. “We have the utmost respect and admiration for FSG as owners and for everything they have achieved at Anfield. To be welcomed as a partner in a club of this stature is a huge privilege.
“We are making this investment because we believe deeply in Liverpool and its leadership, and we look forward to supporting the club's continued success for years to come.”
On Saturday, belief turns into presence. The cameras will find him in the directors’ box as Anfield gets its first look at the man now helping to shape Liverpool’s next era.
