Amir Rrahmani Retires from Kosovo National Team Amid FKK Controversy

Amir Rrahmani has walked away from Kosovo with a bang, not a bow.

The Napoli centre-back has announced his retirement from international football at 32, ending a decade-long spell with the national team and relinquishing the captain’s armband after seven years at the helm. He departs with 66 caps, but it is the manner of his exit – and the target of his anger – that will echo loudest.

A captain slams the door

Rrahmani confirmed his decision on Friday evening, making public a complete breakdown in his relationship with the Football Federation of Kosovo (FKK). His message was blunt: as long as the current leadership remains in charge, he will not return.

“After ten years with the national team, seven of which were spent as captain, I am announcing that I will no longer be part of the Kosovo national team as long as the FKK is led by its current individuals,” he wrote on Instagram.

The statement stripped Kosovo of more than just their captain. It exposed deep fractures at the top of the national game.

Rrahmani said he had felt “completely unsupported” by those running the national setup, painting a picture of long-standing frustration that finally snapped.

Years of tension, no resolution

He laid out his grievances in stark terms, pointing to unresolved issues and a leadership he clearly no longer trusts.

“Due to numerous factors, persistent disagreements and a lack of competent people available to address our problems and grievances, the situation has remained unimproved for years,” he explained.

The pressure, he said, did not just come from neglect. It came from active hostility.

“And what did I get in return? Constant, co-ordinated attacks for more than two years from those people who should have been protecting us. Justice will prevail one day.

“This decision comes from the need to preserve my integrity as a captain and as a professional footballer, but above all, my values as a human being.”

Those are not the words of a player quietly slipping away from the international scene. They are the words of a leader who feels driven out.

Kosovo lose their on-field anchor

On the pitch, the loss is obvious. Rrahmani has been Kosovo’s defensive pillar and emotional reference point since taking the armband. His departure leaves a sizeable void in both experience and authority.

For a relatively young football nation still trying to build stability and identity, losing its most established figure in such contentious circumstances is a heavy blow. The federation now faces the delicate task of appointing a new captain while questions swirl around its own leadership.

Whoever steps up will inherit not just the armband, but a dressing room that has just seen its longest-serving leader walk away in protest.

Door not fully closed

Despite the severity of his criticism, Rrahmani did leave one small crack open. His words make it clear that his retirement is tied directly to the current regime at the FKK. A change at the top could, in theory, reopen the conversation.

For now, though, his focus shifts entirely to club football. At Napoli, where he has already passed the 200-appearance mark, he remains a central figure in one of Serie A’s most respected back lines. The turmoil of his international exit will not change his importance in Italy.

Kosovo, meanwhile, must regroup without the man who has led them for most of their modern history. The armband will find a new arm. The question is whether the federation will confront the storm that forced the old captain to take his off.
