Alvaro Arbeloa Signs Angel on Loan from Real Madrid

Alvaro Arbeloa has gone back to what he knows.

After two straight defeats to open the Premier League season, the Fulham head coach has returned to Valdebebas once more, raiding Real Madrid again to bring in 22-year-old midfielder Angel.

It is a move rooted in trust and history. Arbeloa made Angel captain of his Real Madrid Castilla side and later handed him his first-team debut when both were promoted mid-season. The midfielder responded by breaking into the senior squad, making four La Liga appearances and stepping onto the Champions League stage.

Now he swaps the Bernabeu for the banks of the Thames.

Angel arrives on an initial one-year loan, with Standard Sport reporting that Fulham will then make the deal permanent for £18.3m. The club have confirmed he will sign a long-term contract once that option is triggered, underlining how central he is to Arbeloa’s plans.

The Spaniard has agreed a three-year deal with an option for a further 12 months as part of the arrangement, a commitment that reflects the faith his former academy coach has always shown in him.

“I’ve known him for many years from the Real Madrid youth academy, and he’s a coach who brings out the best in players, gets the most out of each one and, most importantly, understands them," Angel said, speaking about Arbeloa and their long-standing relationship. "Now, he’s going to be coaching me at a higher level, and I must give him the same intensity and commitment – or even more – than ever before.”

Fulham’s summer business had already carried a distinct Madrid flavour. Arbeloa previously brought in Gonzalo Garcia and Cesar Palacios from Real Madrid, along with Shea Charles, as he reshaped a squad that needed fresh energy and technical quality.

Angel adds another layer to that rebuild. A Swedish league and cup winner with Malmo earlier in his career, the 22-year-old offers control and bite in midfield and can be read as the direct replacement for Sasa Lukic, who left for Ipswich Town on a permanent deal earlier in the window.

For Angel, this is a step into a new world and a chance to prove he belongs in one of the game’s most demanding leagues.

“It’s a very proud moment for me and my family – I’m honoured to be here,” he said after signing his contract, the emotion of the move clear as he spoke.

Fulham will not want to wait long to see their new signing in action. Both Angel and fellow arrival Larsson are aiming to make their debuts this weekend, when the Cottagers host Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.

Arbeloa has turned to familiar faces to steady Fulham’s start. Now the question is whether his Madrid core can drag the club up the table and give this season a very different shape.
