Álvarez Rejects Man City and Arsenal as Barcelona Pursuit Continues

Manchester City came calling. Julián Álvarez didn’t even let it reach the bidding stage.

According to Cadena SER, the Argentine striker has flatly rejected the chance to make a dramatic return to the Etihad Stadium, shutting down City’s approach before the Premier League champions could put an official offer on the table. The club contacted Atlético Madrid to explore a reunion with their former No 9. Álvarez’s answer was immediate: no interest, no discussion, no Manchester.

It is a bold stance in the middle of the summer’s most combustible transfer saga.

One player, three giants, no agreement

Álvarez, 26, is locked in a tense standoff with Atlético as Europe’s heavyweights circle. Arsenal have made him their priority signing, the centrepiece of their attacking plans and the “dream” addition for north London. He has turned them down several times as well.

The message is consistent. If he moves, he wants Barcelona. Only Barcelona.

Earlier this summer, Barça tested Atlético’s resolve with a €100 million (£86m) bid. It failed. President Joan Laporta then went public this week, openly confirming the club’s pursuit and calling it “common knowledge” that Álvarez wants to wear the Blaugrana shirt.

The player’s desire is clear. His club’s stance is even clearer.

Atlético have drawn a hard line in the sand. The Madrid side have reiterated that there is a “zero per cent chance” they will sell their star striker to a direct Liga rival. No wiggle room, no compromise, no back channel.

So the forward stands in the middle of a three-way tug-of-war, and nobody is moving.

Personal reasons, not football, shut England down

Álvarez’s refusal to return to England is not about the pitch. It is about life off it.

Reports indicate his reluctance is driven by personal circumstances, with specific UK visa regulations making it difficult for his family to visit regularly. Spain does not present the same hurdles, and that difference carries real weight for the World Cup winner as he considers his next step.

That marks a sharp contrast to his first spell in England. When he arrived at City from River Plate for £14m in January 2022, he embraced the challenge. He scored 36 goals in 103 games, slotted into Pep Guardiola’s relentless machine, and played his part in a historic Treble before Atlético paid £82m to take him to Madrid two summers ago.

The football worked. The life around it, now, is a different calculation.

Trapped between desire and reality

Cadena SER report that Álvarez has been repeatedly reminded that, financially and politically, Arsenal are his only realistic route out of Atlético this summer. The Premier League, not La Liga, offers the escape hatch.

He still refuses to walk through it.

He remains adamant he wants to stay in Spain, ideally in Barcelona colours. Atlético remain just as adamant they will not strengthen a domestic rival. City have been rebuffed, Arsenal have been turned away, and Barça are locked out by a wall of red and white.

The result is paralysis.

With the window ticking down, Álvarez is effectively cornered: a player determined to leave for one club that cannot sign him, employed by a club that will not sell to that one destination, and unconvinced by the only viable alternative on the table.

So the choice hardens into two unappealing paths. Repair a strained relationship in Madrid and commit, at least for now, to Diego Simeone’s project. Or cling to the hope that something breaks late – a softened Atlético stance, a restructured Barcelona offer, or a last-minute twist from England he is finally willing to accept.

For now, the saga sits at a standstill. The next move belongs to Álvarez.
