Álvarez's Future: Arsenal's Interest as Barcelona Exit

For Julián Álvarez, the road out of Madrid has narrowed to a single lane. Barcelona are no longer on it. Arsenal might be.

Atlético Madrid have drawn a thick red line through any possibility of selling their Argentine striker to Barça. According to Marca, club sources are adamant: the chances of Álvarez joining Barcelona are “zero”. Not low. Not unlikely. Zero.

The stance comes as the tension around the player spikes. Álvarez has now skipped training for a third consecutive day, still clinging to the idea of a move to Catalonia. Joan Laporta had vowed that Barcelona would push until deadline day, but every step Barça took only seemed to harden Atlético’s position.

The board even moved to publicly back the decision not to negotiate with the Catalans, a rare show of institutional muscle that underlined how strained relations between the two clubs have become.

Arsenal’s opening

With Barcelona shut out, the market for Álvarez changes shape. Atlético are prepared to sell abroad, but only on their terms: 150 million euros or nothing. The fracture between player and fans was already visible in the recent clash with Villarreal, when sections of the Metropolitano jeered their own star and he walked off alone, straight down the tunnel.

Into that uneasy atmosphere step Arsenal. The Premier League side now look like the most realistic escape route.

The London club have made their interest clear and Álvarez is attracted by the sporting project on offer at the Emirates Stadium. The idea of leading the line in England again appeals. Yet the biggest obstacle might not be Atlético’s price tag or the ticking clock of the transfer window.

It might be paperwork.

The off‑pitch battle: visas and residency

Álvarez’s family live with him in Spain, and any move would have to bring them along. Since Brexit, British immigration rules have tightened, making family relocations more complex and slower to process. Some residence permits for his relatives reportedly expired after his previous spell in England, adding another layer of bureaucracy to an already delicate operation.

There is, however, one clearer path. Journalist Verónica Brunati has reported that Álvarez’s wife can obtain residency in the United Kingdom as the dependent partner of a work visa holder. That would allow her to live with him legally in Britain if the transfer goes through.

Arsenal believe they can navigate that maze. Inside the club there is confidence that, should Álvarez give the green light, they can manage the visa process for his family and remove one of the final excuses to stay put in Madrid.

For now, though, there is still no decisive official offer on Atlético’s table. Just five days remain before the window slams shut on 1 September. The price is set, Barcelona are out, Arsenal are circling, and Álvarez is missing training.

Something has to give.
