Alvarez Considers Arsenal Move as Atletico Stands Firm on Fee
Julian Alvarez’s future has been dragged to the edge of a decision, and the clock is now louder than ever.
Spanish journalist Pedro Morata reports that the forward is set to decide today whether to open formal negotiations with Arsenal or stay put at Atletico Madrid. For weeks, the message from Alvarez’s camp was clear: Barcelona or nowhere. That line has blurred.
Morata now describes the situation as “55–45” in favour of Alvarez remaining in Spain. The other 45 per cent is Arsenal – a door he had previously slammed shut. He is understood to still have serious doubts and does not relish a return to England, yet the idea is no longer off the table.
Behind the scenes, the machinery has been grinding. Director of football Mateu Alemany recently flew to London for talks with Arsenal, a trip detailed by Fabrizio Romano. Arsenal have already made their move: an opening bid of £103 million plus £4m in add-ons. Atletico’s response was blunt. They want £129m.
The numbers are enormous, even by today’s market. Atletico are said to be willing to negotiate, but only within their own strict framework. Part of their openness stems from a clear plan: they want Viktor Gyokeres as Alvarez’s replacement. That ambition, though, collides with public comments from CEO Miguel Angel Gil Marin, who has previously insisted the club would not even consider offers of €150m or €200m for their stars.
So the message from the boardroom is defiant, the behaviour in the market more flexible. Somewhere between those two positions lies the real price.
On the pitch, the tension has already spilled over. Alvarez sat out Atletico’s opening La Liga game, a 2-0 home win over Malaga. His absence did not go unnoticed. Sections of the home support turned on him, with hostile chants underlining how quickly a fan favourite can become a target once doubt creeps in about his commitment.
Diego Simeone tried to cool the mood. Asked about leaving Alvarez out, the Atletico coach said: “We don't believe Julian Alvarez is in the right condition to play or take part for tomorrow's game. Hopefully, over these next four days, he'll make further progress and we'll be closer to where we want him to be.” Officially, it is about fitness. Unofficially, the timing has only poured fuel on the transfer speculation.
For Arsenal, the dilemma is stark. Push closer to Atletico’s £129m demand and they land a marquee forward tailored to Mikel Arteta’s high-pressing, possession-heavy football. Hold their ground, and they risk watching the window close without the elite attacker they have been chasing all summer.
Alvarez is expected to communicate his decision today. If he gives the green light and Atletico soften their stance, Arsenal’s next move will have to be decisive and very expensive. If talks collapse, Arteta will be forced into a frantic late scramble for alternative attacking options as the deadline bears down.
One way or another, Alvarez’s choice now has the power to reshape not just his own career, but Arsenal’s entire attacking plan for the season.
