Alex Mowatt Joins Derby County from West Brom

Derby County have finally got their man.

Alex Mowatt has completed a permanent move from West Bromwich Albion, signing a two-year deal for a fee understood to be in the region of £600,000 – significantly lower than the £2m figure that had been circulating in the West Midlands.

The 29-year-old underwent a medical and finalised the switch today, ending a five-year stay at the Hawthorns and answering a long-standing call from Derby head coach John Eustace, who had pushed to bring him in last summer.

Long-term target lands at Pride Park

Eustace and Derby never really stepped away from Mowatt. Even after the midfielder penned a two-year contract extension at West Brom, the Rams kept tracking his situation, waiting for the moment when a deal became realistic.

That moment arrived with Mowatt entering the final year of his contract. Derby moved, and this time West Brom were ready to talk.

The appeal is obvious. Mowatt brings a wealth of Championship experience and a calm authority at the base of midfield, where he has built a reputation for knitting play together and launching attacks from deep. It is that blend of control and creativity that Derby have been so keen to add.

A career built in the Championship

Born in Doncaster, Mowatt first came through the ranks at Leeds United, graduating from their academy and breaking into the first team before moving to Barnsley. It was at Oakwell that he truly established himself, making more than 140 appearances and captaining the Tykes to the Championship play-offs in 2021.

A loan spell at Oxford United added another layer to his education before Valerien Ismaël took him to West Brom on a free transfer. On his arrival, Ismaël was effusive, calling him “an outstanding midfield player with outstanding qualities and mentality” and highlighting his threat from distance and at set-pieces, as well as his work rate and energy.

Mowatt has also represented England at under-19 and under-20 level, underlining the pedigree Derby are buying into.

Still sharp, still involved

This is no signing plucked from the fringes. Mowatt has already featured for Albion this season, starting in their 4-1 Carabao Cup win at Rotherham United and playing 73 minutes before being replaced by Conor Townsend.

He also spent time on loan at Middlesbrough, helping them to a fourth-place finish in the Championship and adding another promotion-chasing campaign to his CV.

Now, after years of being the player Derby wanted but could not quite reach, Mowatt arrives as a central piece in Eustace’s midfield rebuild. The fee is modest, the experience is not. The question now is simple: how far can he drive Derby in the next two seasons?
