Aleksandar Pavlovic Rejects Manchester City Move, Forces €375 Million Midfield Overhaul

Aleksandar Pavlovic has turned down the kind of move most 22-year-olds only dream about – and forced Manchester City into a €375 million rethink of their entire midfield.

According to Bild, City had locked onto the Bayern Munich midfielder as far back as March, marking him as their top target for the heart of the pitch. The Premier League champions were prepared to go as high as €100 million to get him. The answer from Pavlovic was simple: no.

He did not want England. He did not want to leave Bayern.

By the time that stance became clear, change was already rolling through the Etihad. Inside the club, it was understood in the spring that Pep Guardiola would step down, with Enzo Maresca lined up to succeed him. The Italian, fresh in the job and keen to stamp his mark on the squad, even tried to convince Pavlovic personally.

Same result. No interest. No negotiations. With the Germany international ruling out a move outright, City never even put an official offer on the table.

What followed was a dismantling of one of Europe’s most admired midfields.

Three new central midfielders, €375 million spent, all because their first choice refused to budge.

While City scrambled, Pavlovic stayed exactly where he wanted to be.

A product of Bayern’s academy, he broke through decisively last season, making 44 competitive appearances for the club. He chipped in with four goals and two assists, but his influence went beyond numbers, anchoring Bayern’s midfield with a maturity that belied his age.

Germany took notice. His senior debut came in June 2024, and he has already collected 15 caps.

City moved on. Their midfield now looks radically different, reshaped at enormous cost. Pavlovic, the man they first wanted at the centre of it all, remains in Munich, growing into the role Bayern always imagined for him.
