Reports in recent days placed Balde among the candidates to leave Barça, with Manchester United exploring the possibility of a loan. That idea does not fit Barcelona’s plans. The club would only entertain a permanent transfer, and only on their terms.

Inside the dressing room, though, the mood is different. According to journalist Alex Pintanel, Balde is not ready to walk away just because his role has shrunk. He still believes he can convince Hansi Flick. He still sees himself as a Barcelona left-back, not a bargaining chip.

Against Elche, Flick went a step further and tried Xavi Espart at left-back. The teenager handled the test superbly, another reminder that the pathway from the academy to the first team is very much alive – and that no spot is guaranteed.

Every successful audition chips away at Balde’s previous certainty. The hierarchy has blurred. The left-back slot is now a battlefield.

A fight or a farewell?

For all the noise, Balde’s qualities have not disappeared. His speed, his ability to stretch the pitch, his aggression in transition – they still offer something different to a squad increasingly built on versatility.

If no offer arrives that truly convinces him, he is expected to stay and face the fight head-on. That would mean starting again, training with an edge, and winning back trust rather than leaning on past performances.

From Barcelona’s perspective, that scenario has its appeal. Balde has enjoyed a relatively smooth rise since breaking into the first team. A jolt to his status, a genuine threat to his place, could sharpen his focus.

If he responds, if he hits his ceiling in training and in the minutes he does get, Hansi Flick will have a serious decision to make on that left flank.
