Alejandro Balde's Future at Barcelona: United's Interest Grows

Alejandro Balde’s Barcelona future was thrown into sharp focus on Sunday night – and the spotlight is coming straight from Old Trafford.

The Spain international was a conspicuous absentee from Hansi Flick’s 21-man travelling squad for Barca’s LaLiga opener at Elche in Alicante, one of several players left at home with the transfer window about to enter its final week. For Manchester United, hunting hard for a new long-term left-back, the timing is impossible to ignore.

United circle as Balde left out

Balde’s omission arrives on the back of mounting reports that United have moved him to the top of their list as they search for a successor to Luke Shaw. The 31-year-old is into the final year of his deal at Old Trafford, with the club holding an option for another 12 months, but the hierarchy want a younger option locked in before the window shuts on September 1.

Over recent days, multiple outlets have detailed United’s growing interest in Balde and claimed the club have already made contact with his agent, Jorge Mendes, to explore what a deal might look like. Mendes, one of the most influential figures in the market, has been busy in Catalonia.

According to reports in Spain, relayed by Sport Witness, Mendes travelled to Barcelona initially to tie up Joao Cancelo’s return to the Camp Nou, but also sat down with the club to discuss two more of his clients: Balde and Marc Casado.

Flick is understood not to be pushing Balde towards the exit. Yet the 22-year-old’s exclusion from the Elche trip – along with fellow transfer candidates Casado and Hector Fort – has only fuelled the sense that the door is open if the right bid lands on Barcelona’s desk.

Spanish outlet Jijantes have gone further, stating that Balde himself wants to leave in the final days of the window, with Mendes now working to secure him a new club. That stance, if maintained, hands United a clear opportunity.

Left-back search narrows

United’s need in that position has been no secret. They had Lewis Hall at the top of their shortlist, but Newcastle made it clear they would not sanction another major departure in a summer that has already seen Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon head for the exit.

There have been whispers of a late push for Hall regardless, yet with just over a week left in the window, that deal is widely viewed as virtually impossible to complete.

So the radar has widened. RB Leipzig captain David Raum has been linked. So has Jorge Salinas of Racing Santander, who is also attracting interest from Atletico Madrid. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nathaniel Brown is another name said to feature on United’s list.

Balde, though, now looks like the most attainable high-upside option: 22 years old, a Spain international, already schooled in Barcelona’s system and, crucially, seemingly open to a move.

Carrick’s alarm bells ringing

United’s recruitment focus has swung back to the left side of defence after they finally landed their third midfield signing of the summer, completing a deal for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba worth an initial £65million plus a further £5m in add-ons.

That midfield reinforcement did not mask the issues on show on the opening day of the Premier League season. Michael Carrick watched his side lose 2-0 away to newly-promoted Hull, a flat, worrying display that followed a 4-2 defeat to an AC Milan team led by former United boss Ruben Amorim at the end of pre-season.

The pattern is clear. United are fragile at the back, thin in key areas and running out of time.

If Balde really is ready to walk away from Barcelona, and if his absence from Flick’s squad proves to be the first visible crack, the question now is simple: do United move decisively in the final days of the window, or watch a rare chance at an elite young left-back slip through their fingers?
