Ajax Signs Yves Bissouma: A New Chapter Until 2027

Ajax have ended Yves Bissouma’s spell in limbo, tying the Mali international to a contract at the Johan Cruyff ArenA until June 30, 2027 and giving him a long runway to relaunch his career in the Eredivisie.

The deal takes effect immediately and arrives after a difficult final season at Tottenham, where the 28-year-old featured just 11 times and never truly convinced the coaching staff he could be relied upon week in, week out. His London stint drifted off course amid disciplinary problems, including a high-profile suspension two years ago after social media footage appeared to show him using nitrous oxide.

Now he walks into Amsterdam with a point to prove.

Bissouma, who built his Premier League reputation at Brighton before his move to Spurs, did not hide what the Ajax switch means to him. “I feel really happy. It means a lot, because Ajax is one of the biggest clubs in Europe. And for me to be part of the trip of this great club is something nice,” he said, clearly relishing the chance to step into one of the continent’s most storied environments.

The move, he insisted, did not come out of nowhere. Ajax had sold him on their vision long before pen met paper.

“Not really, because I've spoken to a lot of people here beforehand. They told me about the project and that was very interesting to me. That's why I'm here,” he explained. “They just told me the project, what they really want to do this year and for the years that are coming as well.”

Ajax see more than a reclamation project. They see a spine.

The recruitment team have targeted Bissouma as a piece of midfield steel, a player with top-level mileage who can anchor a young side and set the tone in big games. The midfielder was blunt about his own ambitions for this chapter.

“I’m a winner and then you want to win everything. That’s my desire and I’m ready to start,” he said, framing the move as a fresh start rather than a step down from the Premier League.

He also made it clear he is not arriving just to patch up his own reputation. In a club that prides itself on youth development, Bissouma wants responsibility.

“I'm just going to give them some advice, like how I see things and how I see football. Just to let them know I'm here for all of them, all of the youngest players. They can talk to me, we can have a very good conversation about anything,” he added, positioning himself as both competitor and mentor in a dressing room packed with prospects.

Inside the club, the transfer has been months in the making. Technical Director Jordi Cruijff revealed that Ajax had been monitoring Bissouma’s situation closely, ready to move once his Tottenham contract expired and the opportunity for a free transfer opened up.

“Discussions with Yves began in August and we are delighted that he has now signed for Ajax. We have brought in an experienced player who knows what it takes to perform at the highest level. He is capable of playing in several positions, and we hope he will be available for selection as soon as possible,” Cruijff said.

No fee, a multi-position midfielder, Champions League and Premier League experience, and a player with something to prove. Ajax have rolled the dice on Bissouma’s edge and energy. The question now is whether Amsterdam becomes the stage on which he finally delivers the consistency his talent has always promised.
