Ainsley Maitland-Niles Returns to Premier League with Everton After Lyon Transfer

Everton have secured the permanent transfer of Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon, signing the versatile right-back on a three-year deal. This move ends Everton's search for defensive reinforcements following the departure of long-serving captain Seamus Coleman.

The Merseyside club turned their attention to the transfer market after Coleman ended his 17-year tenure at Everton. Initial reports suggested interest in Fulham’s Kenny Tete, but ultimately, Everton opted to bring back the 29-year-old, who originally came through the Arsenal academy.

Maitland-Niles is Everton’s seventh addition this summer, joining Merlin Rohl, Hayden Hackney, Tyrique George, Christian Norgaard, Brennan Johnson, and the return of Jack Grealish on loan.

The London-born defender boasts a strong resume, having graduated from Arsenal’s academy and won the FA Cup with the Gunners as well as the UEFA Europa Conference League with Roma. Since his arrival at Lyon in August 2023, he made 119 appearances across all competitions, contributing 22 goals and assists. Last season alone, he started 28 league matches in Ligue 1.

His ability to perform both as a full-back and in midfield offers manager David Moyes flexible options in defense, bolstered further by Maitland-Niles’ experience in European competitions like the Europa League.

Upcoming Debut Against Manchester United

If registration proceeds smoothly, Maitland-Niles could make his competitive debut for Everton when they host Manchester United at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday.
