Abdul Abdulmalik Ready for Next Challenge After £1.5m Bid Rejected

Abdul Abdulmalik says he is “ready for the next challenge” and “capable of reaching the top” after Boreham Wood rejected a £1.5m bid from Swedish side Djurgarden for the in-demand forward.

The National League club have already turned down an earlier £1m offer this month and are standing firm, with manager Luke Garrard underlining their stance after leaving Abdulmalik out of Saturday’s 3-0 win over Forest Green.

“He is our player,” Garrard said, making clear Boreham Wood’s position as speculation around their star man intensifies.

A record-breaking offer on the table

Djurgarden’s latest proposal would have smashed the record fee paid for a fifth-tier player in England. That mark has stood since 2012, when Leicester City paid Fleetwood Town £1m for Jamie Vardy, a deal that became one of the most famous gambles in modern English football.

This time, the money is even bigger. And the player at the centre of it believes the moment is too important to ignore.

In a statement released via his agent, the 23-year-old paid tribute to the club that revived his career.

“Everyone at Boreham Wood FC and the incredible fans have played a massive part in my journey. You will always have my respect,” Abdulmalik said.

“With this said, I'm ready for the next challenge. I'm ready to prove to myself and those around me that I'm capable of reaching the top.”

From Millwall cast-off to National League star

Abdulmalik’s rise has been sharp. After coming through Millwall’s academy and representing England at under-17 level, he looked set for a smooth climb. He helped Millwall’s Under-21s secure back-to-back Professional Development League South titles in 2022-23 and 2023-24, but the senior breakthrough never came.

The pathway closed. Millwall released him in 2024.

Boreham Wood moved quickly, picking him up as a free agent. What followed was a breakout campaign that has now drawn eyes from abroad.

In the 2025-26 season, Abdulmalik hit 17 goals and laid on 10 assists as Boreham Wood surged to the National League play-off final. Under the arch at Wembley, he both scored and assisted, stamping his name on the biggest day of the club’s season.

Those numbers, and that stage, changed his market value. They also changed his own expectations.

“Opportunities like this are rare”

For Abdulmalik, Djurgarden’s interest represents more than a lucrative move. It feels like a crossroads.

“Through sheer hard work and perseverance, the opportunity to progress has come around,” he said. “This is my chance to push myself as a footballer, elevate my game and most importantly fulfil my promise to the ones around me.”

He pointed directly at the wider reality for players in non-league football.

“Opportunities like this are rare, especially within the National League where some of the hardest working talent is overlooked.

The game of football is forever changing and decisions are fast paced. There's no guarantee that the same chances come knocking twice.

I owe it to myself and the kids growing up just like me to fight for this one I've been offered.”

Club vs player: a battle brewing

The tension is clear. Boreham Wood do not want to sell. Their manager has made that clear. Their actions back it up: rejecting two substantial bids and omitting their leading forward from a convincing league win.

On the other side stands a 23-year-old who has fought his way back from release, delivered in a promotion push and now feels the window opening.

Djurgarden’s offer tests Boreham Wood’s resolve and the limits of what a National League club can realistically turn down. It also tests how far a player in Abdulmalik’s position can push for a move without fracturing the bond he has built with the club and its supporters.
