Nico Gonzalez Set for Exit from Manchester City as Newcastle Targets Midfielder

Manchester City have told Nico Gonzalez he can leave before the transfer window closes, opening the door for Newcastle United to move on their top midfield target.

Inside the dressing room, not everyone agrees.

Several City players have tried to convince the 24-year-old to stay and fight for his place, but the club’s stance is clear: with competition intensifying and new arrivals bedding in, Gonzalez is no longer guaranteed a meaningful role.

Newcastle push as midfield rebuild gathers pace

Newcastle have already opened talks over a deal for Gonzalez as they scramble to reshape their midfield after the departures of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

The Athletic report that the Magpies have held “exploratory conversations” over a move for the Spain international, who joined City from FC Porto in January last year for £52 million but never fully established himself under Pep Guardiola.

Gonzalez is understood to be one of three midfield options on Newcastle’s shortlist, yet he is viewed as the leading candidate at this stage. Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope claims the player is “open” to joining Eddie Howe’s side, even as some City teammates try to pull him in the opposite direction.

Crowded City midfield leaves Gonzalez exposed

Gonzalez’s path into the starting XI has been blocked since he arrived. Rodri remains undroppable at the base of midfield, while Mateo Kovacic has been preferred in the more advanced role.

The arrival of Elliot Anderson has added another layer of competition, and City are in advanced talks with Lille over Ayyoub Bouaddi, a move that would squeeze the midfield even further.

Any hope that Enzo Maresca’s appointment might revive Gonzalez’s prospects has faded quickly. The Community Shield offered an early hint: Kovacic was again ahead of him in the pecking order, underlining the reality of his situation.

Only weeks ago, Gonzalez sounded committed

At the start of the month, the narrative was very different.

Speaking after a friendly win over K-League All Stars in South Korea, Gonzalez insisted he was content with life at the Etihad.

“I’m happy here. I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here,” he said.

“I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position.

“That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”

Those words painted a picture of a player ready to embrace the fight. The market, and City’s internal reshuffle, have changed the landscape in a matter of weeks.

Now the decision sits with Gonzalez: accept a reduced role in one of Europe’s most ruthless midfields, or take centre stage in Newcastle’s new-look engine room.
