Liverpool Prepares for New Season as Iraola Takes Charge Against Newcastle

Liverpool’s new season starts with a split focus and no room for error. One eye on the pitch at St James’ Park. The other glued to the phone as the transfer window ticks towards its final week.

On Sunday, the Reds open their Premier League campaign away to Newcastle, a fixture already heavy with storylines. Alexander Isak faces his former club, and Andoni Iraola steps into the English top flight as Liverpool manager for the first time, charged with lifting a side that drifted last season under Arne Slot despite returning to the Champions League.

Expectation has followed Iraola through the Anfield gates. So has the realisation that his squad is not yet where it needs to be.

Endrick turns Liverpool down

One potential solution to Liverpool’s attacking puzzle has slipped away.

Endrick, back at Real Madrid after a productive loan spell at Lyon, has rejected Liverpool’s interest and chosen to fight for his place under Jose Mourinho, according to ESPN. At 20, the Brazilian has momentum behind him: eight goals and eight assists in 21 games in France last season, a campaign that suggested he was ready to push for a bigger role at the Bernabeu.

That pathway has narrowed. Yan Diomande’s arrival adds another high-profile obstacle to a front line already dominated by Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, who will lock down two of the three attacking berths. Diomande, a £100million signing, looks the obvious candidate for the remaining slot on the right.

Rodrygo is also in the mix once he returns from injury, with Mourinho said to view him as part of his plans. It is a crowded room. Endrick wants to stay in it anyway.

For Liverpool, it is a miss that stings. The youngster would have offered Iraola valuable versatility: cover through the middle, support for Isak, and an option off the right in a team still coming to terms with the abrupt departure of Mohamed Salah. That vacancy remains glaring.

The search for wide reinforcements has already hit another obstacle. A £50million bid for Brighton winger Yankuba Minteh has been knocked back, with Liverpool expected to return with an improved offer. The clock is running, and the right flank is still without its long-term heir.

Iraola: “We will definitely sign some players”

If there was any doubt about Liverpool’s intentions in the market, Iraola removed it.

The Spaniard has been blunt about the state of his squad, describing it as “thin” and insisting that reinforcements will arrive before the deadline on September 1. Speaking on Friday, he made the promise supporters wanted to hear.

“We will definitely sign some players. Some deals you have to wait until the end,” he told Sky Sports. “But the end is the important picture, the one we will have on September 1, because it is true that we are still quite thin.”

There has been movement already. Ronald Araujo has come in on loan from Barcelona after Joe Gomez suffered an injury in pre-season, shoring up the defence. Yet the gaps are still obvious.

Right-back remains a concern with Conor Bradley battling fitness issues. Curtis Jones has left for Inter Milan, stripping more depth from midfield and nudging Liverpool towards the market in that area as well. A new midfielder is firmly on the table.

Even so, for many around Anfield the priority is clear: replacing Salah’s presence and production on the right. Internally, there are options. Rio Ngumoha is expected to see more minutes on that flank, while Victor Munoz can operate there despite it not being his preferred side.

But those are gambles. Title challenges are rarely built on hope alone.

As Iraola walks out at St James’ Park for his Premier League bow, he does so knowing this is only half his job. The other half plays out in boardrooms and on late-night calls over the coming days.

By the time September 1 arrives, Liverpool will either look like a squad ready to chase down the title – or one still scrambling to catch up.
