Juventus Sign Jhon Lucumí for €22 Million Deal
Juventus finally have their man.
After a summer spent circling defensive targets and debating how to refresh a back line in clear need of renewal, the Bianconeri have moved decisively, landing Bologna’s Jhon Lucumí in a deal that could rise to €22 million.
A deal Juve had to make
The club confirmed on Monday that Lucumí joins for an initial €19.5 million, payable over three financial years, with a further €0.6 million in ancillary costs and up to €2 million in bonuses tied to performance objectives. The Colombian center back has signed a contract through June 30, 2030 and is set to earn around €2.5 million net per season.
This is not a move that came together overnight. Lucumí, 28 and fresh off an impressive World Cup campaign, had made his intentions clear early in the window: he wanted Juventus. He turned down other approaches and sat tight while Juve and Bologna argued over figures and structure.
They finally found common ground late last week. The result is a transfer that feels as much like a reward for Lucumí’s patience as it does a strategic piece of business for Juventus.
From Bologna pillar to Juve cornerstone
Lucumí arrives in Turin after four seasons in Emilia-Romagna, where he quietly became one of the most reliable defenders in Serie A. At Bologna he was not just a starter; he was a constant. He logged at least 2,200 league minutes in each of his four campaigns, anchoring a side that steadily climbed from mid-table respectability to the Champions League places under Thiago Motta.
He then helped Bologna cap that rise with a Coppa Italia final victory the following year, standing firm at the heart of the defense in the club’s first major trophy win of the modern era. That run, combined with his composure on the international stage, pushed his reputation to a new level.
Now he walks into a very different kind of pressure.
Juventus have been crying out for fresh legs and personality at the back, a defender who can handle both the physical grind of Serie A and the scrutiny that comes with the black and white shirt. Lucumí’s consistency, availability, and big-game experience tick those boxes.
The club needed a defender ready to start from day one of the new season. Lucumí has spent the last four years proving he belongs exactly in that role.
The wait is over. Now comes the real test: can the Colombian who drove Bologna to the Champions League become the cornerstone of Juventus’ next great defense?
