Dan Burn Named Permanent Captain of Newcastle United
Dan Burn’s boyhood dream now has an armband.
The towering defender has been named Newcastle United’s permanent captain, a decision confirmed by new head coach Matthias Jaissle on Saturday and one Burn described as “really special”.
The role had been vacant since Bruno Guimaraes’ summer departure, leaving a clear question at the heart of the dressing room. Jaissle has now answered it by turning to the local lad who grew up on the terraces and has since become one of the faces of the club’s revival.
Burn, who joined Newcastle in 2021, has already racked up 193 appearances in black and white. He has worn the armband on several occasions, but this is different. This is his team now.
“It’s an absolute honour to be named captain of Newcastle United,” he said after the announcement. “It’s always an immense privilege to represent this football club, especially when I have been trusted with the armband on previous occasions, but to lead the team on a permanent basis is going to be really special.
“It’s been an incredible journey since I joined the club four-and-a-half years ago – we’ve achieved some amazing things together and enjoyed some unforgettable moments.
“I believe there’s still more to come and I’m relishing the responsibility of pushing everybody every single day to make sure that is the case.”
Jaissle has wasted no time stamping his authority on the squad, and in Burn he sees the standard-bearer for his new era.
“Dan is a natural leader and a perfect fit for the role of Newcastle United captain,” the head coach said. “He puts the interests of the team ahead of his own every time he steps onto the pitch and always gives maximum commitment in everything he does.
“Off the pitch, he leads by example in how he conducts himself. Not many people understand what this club means to the city better than Dan and that experience will be vital in helping guide our younger players through this period of change and adaptation.”

The question now is how far Dan Burn can drag his boyhood club in this new chapter.
