Arsenal's Bold Move for Julian Alvarez: Arteta's Direct Approach

Mikel Arteta has stepped directly into the negotiations for Julian Alvarez, personally contacting the Atletico Madrid forward in a bid to land the marquee attacker Arsenal want before the transfer window closes, according to El Desmarque.

Arsenal have had Alvarez at the top of their attacking shortlist for some time. The former Man City forward is viewed inside the club as the missing piece in a squad still stung by last season’s Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

Viktor Gyokeres delivered a strong first campaign at the Emirates, hitting 21 goals and quickly winning over supporters. Yet within the technical staff, the feeling is clear: to finally get over the line in Europe, they want a forward of Alvarez’s calibre leading the line on the biggest nights.

Atletico, though, are not eager sellers. Diego Simeone has made no secret of his desire to keep his compatriot, seeing Alvarez as central to his plans. The boardroom mood is different. Faced with the prospect of strengthening a direct La Liga rival, Atletico chiefs would far rather negotiate with Arsenal than send the Argentine to Barcelona.

That internal tension has shaped the market. Mundo Deportivo have previously reported that Atletico have actively tried to push Alvarez toward the Premier League, steering him away from Barcelona. So far, that has not shifted the player’s stance.

Arsenal, sensing an opening, have gone bold. As reported by COPE, they have put Gyokeres on the table in a swap proposal, offering Simeone an instant, ready-made replacement for Alvarez. On paper, it cushions the blow: a Sweden international, proven at the Emirates, dropped straight into Atletico’s attack.

The response from Alvarez’s camp has been stubborn. His priority remains Barcelona.

And yet Barcelona’s familiar problem refuses to go away. Their financial instability continues to shape every major move. Hansi Flick wants a new forward after Ferran Torres’ departure to Paris Saint-Germain and is scouring the market for options. Barcelona like Alvarez, but Atletico’s valuation is a serious obstacle, and the Catalan club’s budget is tight.

That could twist the saga again. If Barca cannot meet Atletico’s demands, the door swings back toward north London. Flick may even be forced to look elsewhere, with Gyokeres emerging as a potential alternative target should Alvarez prove too expensive.

Arsenal are not waiting around. Fully aware that the Alvarez pursuit could collapse on the player’s preference alone, they have opened parallel talks for Victor Osimhen, currently at Galatasaray. The Nigerian is viewed as a high-level alternative, capable of leading the line if Alvarez continues to hold out for Barcelona.

Discussions with the Turkish club took place last week, folded into broader negotiations involving highly rated teenager Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Martinelli. Arsenal want options. They intend to leave this window with a top-tier centre-forward, one way or another.

The next few days will define that plan. Arsenal are waiting on a definitive answer from Madrid, with Arteta’s personal intervention underlining just how badly the club want Alvarez.

The question is simple, and it now rests with the player: does he accept a return to England and the promise of leading Arsenal’s Champions League charge, or hold firm for a Barcelona move that may never quite add up on the balance sheet?
